Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Millie ate a little piece of onion!

Hi everyone,
I had a bit of a scare today. I was eating a vegie burger and it had lettuce and onion on it.
Cheeky girl Millie saw a piece of lettuce or onion hanging out the side of the bun and she pulled it out and ate it!
I am now paranoid it was onion, and I know full well that onion is toxic for dogs and a side effect is hemolytic anemia.
I can't be sure it was onion, as it could have been lettuce, but I am worried nonetheless.
I phoned the vet and she said at certain doses only is onion toxic enough to harm dogs and that if it as onion, one piece would not harm Millie.
I am terrified Millie might relapse, and to make matters worse, I am away from her for the next two nights and she is with my parents. I have asked them to be vigilant over the next two days.
Am I being paranoid or should I just relax?

Sam and Millie.

Samantha, I can't tell you to relax and not be paranoid BECAUSE I'd be worse than you probably! LOL I've heard some vets say the same thing about quantity but then I've also heard of others that have said even small bits of onion powder can trigger a response! I'd be keeping the calls going to the parents to keep tabs on her if it were me. (yeah...Mr. Paranoid speaking here!)

Sending Millie some good luck vibes. Hopefully it was just lettuce.

Hi Samantha, I would be very concerned if my Sophie got a piece of onion too. Keep good tabs on her for the week and hopefully she will be ok. Debbie

Samantha,
Hopefully a little bite will do no harm. My Mom used to host Japanese exchange students who would buy boxes of See's chocolates and I cannot count the times one of her dogs would get into them and devour an entire box with no adverse effects except an upset stomach. Perhaps it really was just a piece of lettuce. The paranoia this disease plants in you is terrible.

If Ginger ate a small piece of onion I would not be worried at all, if she ate the whole onion then I would be concerned. I think Mille will be just fine.

Hugs to Mille:)

Samantha -

I know how it is to be worried about all the possible triggers but, if it helps, I wanted to let you know Murray pulled a similar "trick" some time ago and we thought he may have nabbed a piece of onion off a slice of pizza. I called the ER hospital that treated him through his IMHA/sepsis crisis and they said a dog his size (~44 lbs.) would need to eat closer to a 1/4 cup to have any harmful effects.

We all know every dog is different and none of them have "read the book" but I at least felt comfortable that there was a difference between what we thought he may have gotten (just a piece) and what the doctors felt could be harmful (a larger amount).

Happily, he had no problems and I hope that's the case for Millie as well.

Samantha,
About 3 weeks ago Harley ate a small pice of onion (about the size of a quarter) like you I started getting really parniod so I took him to the vet, she told me to keep a close eye on him to check his gums and if he acted different to bring him back in. well his gums are fine and he's still the same spunky, hyper fur child and is doing great. So just keep a close eye on him, check his gums and if he acts differently then take him to the vet...Sending good vibes your way....God Bless

thanks for everyone's advice.
Two weeks on and Millie is fine....
I need to learn to relax!

Millie had her regular check up recently, and has been diagnosed with arthritis in her right knee. She also goes for follow up tests on her heart as she has slowed down a bit over the last few weeks. We are hoping the heart disease has not progressed too much.
