Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Message for Brenda VA

Brenda,

How sweet and thoughtful you are to light a candle for Darcy. It really touches my heart that you would care so much about us.

I received an answer from Dr. Dodds about the Hemopet universal donor transfusion and have sent it to our vet. I'm just in a quandry, trying to figure out what's best for Darcy. She's still eating, begging occasionally for food, and wagging her tail. I've added back in the Standard Process Ferrofood, Immune Builder, and Bone Builder --- all of which are supposed to help blood production. I'm also giving her fresh cooked meat and steamed veggies. Her tongue looks pink tonight, but her gums and inside of ears are still pale.

Please keep us in your prayers.

Thanks for the update, Karen -- I was going to write and ask about Darcy. You are doing so much, and doing so much RIGHT. Sending you hugs...

Dear Karen -- The candles are just a simple gesture, but it makes me feel as if I'm doing something when I light a candle for one of our IMHA dogs. And the story of Darcy's and your fight against IMHA really hits close to home, because my dear Wiley was a beagle. We fought and lost, but I didn't find this forum until after it was over, and I always wonder what might have happened if I knew more because of the benefit of all the wonderful people here.

That said, my sweet beagle had a severely compromised immune system, so I don't think Wiley had much of a chance no matter how determined we were. In fact, your sharing Dr. Dodds' comment about beagles and autoimmune thyroiditis really hit home, because Wiley's health history is consistent with that.

You and Darcy take care. It is so good that she is eating, begging, and wagging her tail. She also is a determined little beagle. Please keep us posted about your special girl.
