Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Meisha's Hope Award featured on Good News for pets

I know I have mentioned on here recently a time or two about the winner of the 2008 Meisha's Hope Award. What a thrill it was this morning when I received an email telling me that this story had been picked up by Good News for Pets.

Just another way for dog owner/caregivers and others to learn about AIHA/IMHA.

Joanne -- thank you for sharing. Dr. Shakelford sounds like an extraordinary vet, and his ability to save Maggie Mae from IMHA just goes to show you that a vet doesn't have to be in some fancy urban hospital to know how to handle. The vet needs to be someone who is up on developments in veterinary diseases and treatment regimens and has a strong commitment to being there for his patients. This is a vet who loves his work and his clients.

I was so sad to read the postscript that Carolyn lost her sweet Maggie unexpectedly following Dr. Shakelford's winning of the Meisha's Hope Award. Carolyn and her family went through so much with losing her daughter, and that sweet little dog provided comfort to Carolyn and three little grandchildren who lost their mother. I can only imagine the grief that family felt from losing their sweet comfort, Maggie.

That is such a beautiful testament to an obviously wonderful vet, a man who cares deeply for his patients.

It was so sad to read the postscript that poor Maggie lost her fight so suddenly, compounding the grief the family had already suffered with the loss of the daughter.

I wish them well.

What a great story, aside from the losses of course. I wish that I could find a Vet like Dr. Shakleford.
Hopefully more people will learn about AIHA before they get that awful diagnosis.

Yesterday I received a photo of Dr.Shackelford and the Watts' with the actual 2008 Meisha's Hope Award Plaque. That photo is now on line

I wish I would have had this photo before the Good News for Pets site picked up the story but I am just thrilled they did since this means more people will be exposed to info on AIHA/IMHA.
