Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Maggie - Poss. adverse reaction to medication?

Hi everyone. Maggie is about the same as my last post on Friday. She had one concerning symptom that started yesterday. She seemed to have some sort of central nervous twitching. From time to time she would shiver, click her jaw, and just seems to have trouble controlling it. Didn't know if this was something that could happen with AIHA. I checked out all her meds on PetMed to see about adverse reactions. One, in particular, did state that an allergic reaction to BAYTRIL (antibiotic) had a slight chance of causing central nervous system reactions. Has anyone ever dealt with this or knows of anyone who has. Since it's Sunday and I can't contact our vet until tomorrow, I decided to cut her baytril dosage in half today. She hasn't exhibited any signs for about 8-10 hrs. Thanks for any input you might be able to offer on this. It's upsetting that the vets do not warn you more about possible adverse side effects of these drugs that they have you administer to your dogs. Maggie is also taking prednisone, Atopica (autoimmune suppressant), reglan (nausea), and famoticide (pepcid). Thanks.

Hi Patty. The nervous twitching could be a side effect of the Atopica. My dog's head would tremour kind of like a person with Parkinson's Disease. This didn't happen very often and in time it disappeared. But the nervous twitching is definitely one possible side effect of Atopica. I know this is early days for you, but with Atopica it is important to get the blood serum levels checked to make sure that Maggie isn't getting too high a dosage. The internists recommended serum testing about two weeks after Duck started on the cyclosporine (atopica). As it turned out his serum levels were too high and we had to reduce the dose.

Hang in there and keep us posted.

Hi Patty, I just posted and then read your latest.
Kent used to sit, shiver, and click his jaws like he was trying to catch invisible flies. Very disconcerting and the vet did not have much to say about this. It could be the atopica, but you might try skipping a dose or two of the pepcid, and do ask for sucralfate.
