Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Maggie 27 Dec. CBC - 39 hematocrit

Maggie is no longer anemic, for the first time since last summer. We are continuing to lower her Prednisone dose (started at 80, had to drastically reduce during her hospital stay).

I don't have all the paperwork but her HCT is 39.

Her new dose of pred is 10 mgs. She is active and has more energy than I know what to do with. We are going on much longer walks and at the end, she still has energy. She does have Lipemia which hasn't really alarmed the vets, but we will do a 12 hour fast prior to her next CBC just to see if its still there...

We have been on a topsy turvy journey and its great to have her respond so well and so rapidly after nearly losing her in November.

Happy Holidays

great news, your hard work has paid off! enjoy all that extra energy, once we reached 40 our energy level went through the roof, now we have a wonderful 'new' problem of trying to keep all that newly returned energy from destroying the house!!! Happy 2012 to you and yours!

Thank you all!

@charlie - today I felt the full effect of Maggie's recovery as we suffered our first "complication" resulting from her burst in energy. Following our morning walk, Maggie saw a squirrel and chased it vigorously around the side of the house. She came back with blood lightly dripping from her paw. I quickly checked it and clean it with warm water then left for work. I came home to find she had enough energy to once again clean my counter of any goodies, including a bag of dog treats and a loaf of bread.

Took Maggie for an evening walk and noticed a slight limp. I brushed her paw and she responded positively for awhile but resumed limping slightly. I shined the flashlight on it and discovered a decent size laceration on her pad!

Given my caution and hyper-awareness of infection, I took Maggie to the hospital where they cleaned it, sutured and bandaged it then put a "Mediboot" on her paw. She also a a prescription of Clindamycin (antibiotic).

Looks like things are returning to normal around your house,, squirrel chasing and all around mischief -- I have found myself almost in tears many times watching the crazy normal dog returning -- we are celebrating birthday number 2 next week, one we thought just a few months ago we would never see --
Will be waiting for your next post -- want to see what maggie does to that mediboot from the vet, has she chewed it off yet?? enjoy, and hang on to that leash if squirrels are around!!

Had a very similar experience with Milly yesterday - always about the squirrels. Milly came back limping a bit from the chase - with her old enthusiasm and energy - and then jumped off a stone wall and couldn't support herself and landed - splat - on her belly. A bit of limping for awhile but no other apparent injury.
