Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - MAF/Meisha's Hope Fund Study

From time to time people ask me about the studies the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at Morris Animal Foundation:

is sponsoring. I get updates on these studies but since these studies are ongoing the amount of info I am allowed to share on them is limited. Yesterday I received the following info on a study that I am able to share.

Comparison of Thromboprophylatic Therapies on Outcome and Hemodynamics in Canine Immune-Mediated Hemolytic anemia

Start date: February 1, 2010
End date: December 31, 2011 (end of data collection)

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) causes life-threatening anemia in dogs. It occurs when a dog’s immune system destroys the animal’s normal red blood cells. Despite aggressive treatment to suppress the immune system, up to 50 percent of afflicted dogs die from the disease. The most common complication and cause of death in affected dogs is formation of blood clots that obstruct blood flow to vital organs. Many dogs with IMHA are given blood-thinning doses of aspirin, but the efficacy of this therapy is unknown. Researchers from the University of Guelph are comparing the efficacy of aspirin to that of two newer anticoagulants (clopidogrel and enoxaparin) to determine which is more reliable in decreasing blood clot formations. This study is in the early phase of patient accrual and researchers are collaborating with Purdue University. The results of this study will generate evidence-based guidelines for clot prevention therapy in canine IMHA which will benefit veterinarians, affected dogs and their owners and potentially decrease morbidity and mortality.

A big thank you to each and everyone of you who have donated to the Meisha’s Hope Fund at Morris Animal Foundation. It is your donations that are making this and other studies on Canine AIHA/IMHA possible.

Interesting! Can't wait to hear the results from the study!

I am so happy every time I read about a new study being done. Thank you Joanne and MAF for setting up Meisha's Hope so that some day there will be more answers aand better treatment.

We hope for the day when they will say a cure is found. It will be the miracle so many are looking for. Thanks Joanne for the update.
