Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Maddie's CBC is 'Beautiful'

On Friday Maddie had another CBC--the first one since she's been off all prednisone--her last dose of only 5 mg was three weeks ago.

The vet/specialist called Saturday morning to tell me her
CBC was "beautiful" with the hematocrit of 44.8 and all the counts were in the normal range. :-)

She wants to do another urine culture in December or January to make sure there's no regrowth of the e-coli. If/when that results come back negative, she'll consider
Maddie cured!

We discussed inoculations because Maddie is due for her three year rabies shot next year. She said that the rabies shot is pretty safe, but she doesn't recommend any of the 5 in 1 combo shots. She said that if she was due for one of those, she'd have each component of it given separately about three weeks apart.

I told her that my regular vet isn't that keen on giving older dogs (Maddie's now 7 and considered a senior.), any other inoculations.

Then she said that next year's rabies shot may be the last one Maddie ever gets. We also discussed doing a titer for the rabies, and I'll discuss that with my regular vet. Titers cost "only" $110 nowadays.

In the meanwhile, I've had a fecal done on her so that she can be certified as a Therapy Dog with TDIncorporated.

Ruth,
Did you ever think that a "beautiful CBC" would have ever been in your vocabulary? Congrats to you both!

Ruth,

That is fabulous news for you and Maddie! I remember what a fight you had for her this summer and that one Wednesday when you thought it was time to say good-bye. I'm thrilled you got a different outcome and I think your story will serve as real hope for those who are fighting as hard now - no one knows how this horrible illness will turn out but, sometimes, you get the outcome you hope and pray for. Maddie is lucky to have you in her corner and I hope she continues to do well!

Thank you for sharing your experience with me - it was very helpful as we were fighting the eColi infection with Murray.

Take care,
Bonnie
