Magnus (Presa Canario) was originally diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He has been taking 6mg of chemo every other day for the 4 months. He has been doing great until lately. He had a staph infection show up onhis skin about 3 weeks ago. This last week he became very lethargic and I thought his illness had finally gotten the best of him. After taking him back to see his vet, he mentioned that Mag's thyroid levels were off when he was originally diagnosed but he wanted to treat Mag's cancer first. He never even mentioned Mag's thyroid issue to me until just the other day. He put Mag on thyroid meds and he has bounced back to his perky self again...I was super thankful. Anyways, today I decided to see if there was any connection between a high lymphocyte count and thyroid issues and found out about the Lymphocyte Thyroiditis. I called my vet today and he said that yes that is probably what Mag has.... They want to continue his chemo and thyroid meds. Does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge on this disease?

Hi Shannon, I'm not sure, I don't think that regular hypothyroid is the same thing, but many of the IMHA dogs do develop hypothyroid as well, and I must say, when we finally identified that in Tiggs and got him on Thyroxine, he was a new pup. Hope that this does the trick for Mag too! melissa and tiggs

Shannon, You might want to contact Dr. Dodds at hemopet.org She is very giving with her time and expertise. She is the only Vet that I know who has ever brought up checking thyroids as part of any testing for dogs. Also because she is a non-profit organization her rates are really reasonable if you want her to look over Magnus paperwork. Penny

Sorry I never responded... Life has been super hectic. Well, my vet put Mag on Soloxine (.8 mg x 2 a day) and what a difference we have seen!! He has his energy back and is losing the added 20lbs he gained recently! I thought he was looking healthier due to his chemo conquering the cancer... Ha! Luckily, we have an outstanding vet that refuses to give up!
