Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Lucy

Hi all,
My 9 yr old rat terrier Lucy is a 3 yr AIHA & Evans w/diabetes survivor. she has had recent teeth infections. she is scheduled for a dental next week and 2 extractions. i'm just worried about her going through this with all of her other issues. has anyone had this procedure on your stable AIHA pet? Thanks!

Welcome to the site Susan and Lucy. Congratulations on being survivors. That is awesome. I don't have an answer to your question, just wanted to say welcome aboard and I am sure you will have many people who can answer your question. Good luck.

Hello Susan, and welcome,
Has Lucy had any anesthesia since having AIHA? I am always concerned about anesthesia in theses dogs. It puts such stress on the immune system. There has been some talk on this forum about having dentals done (scaling) without having to undergo anesthesia

Susan:

Our dog Sheba (diagnosed April 2008)had her teeth cleaned and x-rays done in November 2008 which required anesthesia. She was still on Atopica at the time but no pred. We were more concerned about her age (11 1/2 - 12) then we were about her IMHA status. She did fine but of course all dogs are different. We hope Lucy does fine too - we'll be keeping you in our thoughts!

Congrats on being a 3 year survivor Lucy. I can't offer any advise on the dental cleaning/extractions but I hope you find the answers you need. If it has to be done it has to be done...right.

Best wishes and positive vibes for you both.

Thanks everyone. No, Lucy has not had any anesthesia since AIHA. her meds are insulin, azothyoprine, thyroid pills, liver supplement.

Susan,
Happy to read that the dental work had no adverse effects on your dear Lucy. Sounds like it should be a frosty paws event. Keep up the good work.
