Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Loss of muscle mass/GREAT NEWS

I have read some things about this, but had no idea what it meant.

But I think Gunner may be experiencing this .... his head is VERY boney all of the sudden , Ryan and I keep calling him the shrinking head ! And I am noticing him having some trouble getting up and down, especially on the wood floors. My vet said that it could be loss of some muscle from the pred. But is there anything you can give to he rebulid this ?

On a better note, he got great news on his blood work .... He is up to 39 !!!!!!! Long way from 8, 5 weeks ago !!!! And his retic over 300,000 and showing signs of regenerating !!!!!! SOOOOOO EXCITED !!!!!!!

My vet is now starting to wean him down off some of the meds. What are your thoughts on getting off the meds ?

Hi Jacki,

Great news on the pcv and also glad to hear his leg issue is getting better. :)

As for the bony head......it will get better once the pred is able to be reduced. It might take some time but it does happen. My poor Jacob's head got real bony. I mean the bones on the sides of his eyes stuck out real bad. It might look strange to you but rest assured Gunner don't care. :)

Thanks for the update. What wonderful news!!

Poor Gunner is now a "pred head" sorry about making jokes about it, but with a PCV of 39 I guess we can start joking around again! Yippee!!! As Teresa said, Gunner will get his muscle and normal head back once the medications are reduced. There is not really anything you can do to help build the muscle at this point. Moderate exercise is ok and might help a bit. Bottom line is the medications will have to come down and the muscle will slowly come back.
Rule of thumb for reducing the medications is, not more than 25-33% every 2-4 weeks, one medication at a time and preferably you do a CBC before reducing.
Things are looking up and I hope Gunner's leg will heal up soon too.

Best wishes,
