Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - lola's latest cbc

Hello! So we got the hard copy of Lola's cbc results- some good news to be found.

Her absolute reticulocytes are actually too high, as is her reticulocyte count and retic production index--polychromasia and anisocytosis = slight ---which apparently means that there is regeneration occuring (i read that anisocytosis occurs in a regenerative response, typically due to the presence of large polychromatophils) --our vet said the same thing..

her wbc and rbc are still low along with her hgb and hct but not scary low to me- her autoplatelets just say
decreased" --no exact number--i wish we had a number on that so we could at least see how decreased they are--the platelets are what is making me the most nervous

--her neutrophils and lymphocytes are normal! normal is a word i like!
her absolute neutrophil seg and absolute lymphocytes are both low

her monocytes and eosinophils are normal

her basophil is high at 4% on a scale of 0-1% --this is apparently a cause of a million possibilities ie hypothyroidism anemia etc etc --but her absolute basophils are normal

so basically i am happy for the moment, but my biggest fear which is her lack of platelets, has not been relieved yet--we are going to regroup and plan our next step for lola!

any thoughts or advice is always appreciated!! :)

thank you,
christina and lola

Christina:

Don't get too hung up on the platlets ... as long as they are not dropping significantly.

From what I understand it takes a little longer for marrow to release platlets.

As he platlet count is still low just make sure to protect her from injury.

It seems like the prednisone is doing it's work and suppressing the immune system. You just have to let the rest play it course. It will happen ... nto as sonn as everyone would hope... but it still will.

Imagine what vets were saying a week ago that this was useless ... geez glad they are not my doctors.

Christina,

Isn't it amazing the new words we are learning?? The lab results sound like a great step in the right direction....Glad you mentioned the anisocytosis, as Bentley had that on his last report as well.

We're still fighting to stabilize as well, so know what you're going through. Just know we're keeping you and Lola in our thoughts and prayers. Mr. B sends her the BIGGEST puppy kiss ever :)

(((Christina and Lola))) Good to hear the retics are high! This is a good thing and if they're saying that they're too high then i'm confused. The higher the better IMO. I wouldn't worry about the basophils...like you said many things can cause these to be high. The absolute number is normal which is much more important than the percentage in comparison to the total WBC...which is low so...!
I'd LOVE to know the actual numbers as opposed to just "they're low or high". I can't help but wonder now if the lymphocyte counts are low enough to properly suppress the system...since the % is norm. Again...the actual numbers would be great to know. Especially the platelet counts!!!!!
Has the thyroid ever been checked or supplemented? Have they ever sent out for a tick panel (a FULL panel)?
As Elaine mentioned...it's super important to be keeping her really really calm. The smallest bump can cause BIG problems if platelets are too low. I'd be making sure to supplement with sucralfate/carafate and always give meds with food to help prevent internal bleeding.
Give a shout if I can help in any way. Lots of hugs, thoughts and prayers for Lola!

thank you johnny and tessy! i can provide you with all of the numbers except the platelets, because i don't even know them!! which is very aggravating-- and we have been giving her the sucralfate along with the thryroxine 1 hour prior to her other meds (which we give with food)

as always, thank you mr. b, you continue to be our biggest puppy supporter! xo

elaine- i am glad they are not my doctors as well lol! i regret the time that we wasted there. i'm glad to hear it takes a little time to release platelets, that is my biggest worry.
