Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Little 'Princess' Daisy update

Last night I noticed that Daisy seemed a bit congested and her heartrate was rather elavated but otherwise very active (playing with her favorite squeaky plus unicorn), barking, fabulous appetite and thirst. Although we have an appointment on Monday for a pcv check I'd rather be safe than sorry so I took her to our local vet who said her temperature was normal, heartrate was elavated, noticed slight congestion with some clear nasal discharge but nothing he would be alarmed about and her gums and skin were pink. Her pcv was 27 down from 30 last Monday. Since her thirst has increased in the past few days in addition to her need to urinate we feel confidant that the predisone is starting to kick in. We're keeping our fingers crossed and saying alot of prayers that her counts start going up or that she at least maintains her current level. The doctors feel extremely hopeful in her case. Anyone out there have a little one with IMHA with the underlying cause of bone marrow targeting? I would love to converse with you.

Evelyn,

My dog, Murray, was diagnosed with non-regenerative IMHA at the level of the bone marrow in March of 2007. I'm not familiar with the term "bone marrow targeting" but Murray was diagnosed through a bone marrow biopsy after other diagnostics ruled out alternative possible causes of the anemia. The bone marrow biopsy indicated his precursor cells were being destroyed before they could be released in his system so the internist we were seeing at the time dianosed it as non-regenerative IMHA at the level of the marrow.

I'm not sure from your post if this is similar to Daisy's situation or not but would be happy to share our experience/situation if you think it might be of help to you and Daisy (my sister had a mini schnauzer, Daisy, she lost at 4 yrs to acute pancreatitis so I have a soft spot for all Daisy's).

Happy to talk and wishing you the best,

Bonnie

Bonnie,
Thank goodness someone else other there with the same form. Bone marrow targeting is just another name to describe nonregenerative imha at the bone marrow. I would love to hear more about Murray and his treatment, etc. Please email me at elm52160@aol.com.

Bonnie and Evelyn.
Trixie had the same, nonregenerative. a few weeks into the onset of AIHA, they did a Marrow Bone biopsy and this showed what was going on, it showed her cells were being destroyed befor they could get into the system. She is of course still being treated and had a blood transfusion a few weeks ago because her PCV were below 15 I believe and she wasn't doing at all well in herself. She picked up after the transfusion, PCV went up to 31% 2 weeks ago, however it has now dropped to 27.8%, as of last Monday.
Tricia.
p.s. The treatment Trixie is on is Prend, (antepsin and Zantec to protect the stomach) and aspirin. She has been on the same dosage of prend for about 3 months now 1@25mg mornings and 1/2 evenings.
