Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Lindy today

I was happy to see that this site was still up and running, but sad to see that dogs are still dying of AIHA. My heart goes out to everyone who has gone through this dreaded disease.
Lindy, a cairn terrier, was diagnosed in May of 2005. at the age of 6. After being initially treated by our vet, then an emergency room vet, and finally Colorado State University's School of Veterinary Medicine, she is currently in remission and back to being healthy and happy. We celebrated her 13th birthday in January and are thankful every day, for the excellent vets that treated her successfully.
Recently our local vet mentioned weaning Lindy off of azathioprine, which she takes 25 mg eod. My biggest fear is a relapse. Has anyone had success doing this, after so many years of being stable?
Thanks Joanne for all your dedicated work in maintianing this site as well as Meisha's Hope. You are an angel.

Nancy, how nice to hear from you again and learn that Lindy is doing well.

For anyone who has not read Lindy's AIHA Success Story you can do so here:

Nancy,
since I am slightly paranoid after our experience with AIHA, if I would be in your shoes, I would consult with Dr. Dodds at hemopet. 25mg eod still seems to be a fairly significant dose considering Lindy's small size. I am so glad she is doing great, happy and healthy!
Best wishes,

Nancy,
Wouldn't it be wonderful if this site was no longer necessary. I am so happy that Lindy is doing so well. She is such a cutie. I don't know what to tell you on the reduction. It has to be a scary thought no matter what. I second the thought of running it by Dr. Dodds. Happy Belated Birthday Lindy and wishes for many more.

Hi, it is great to see long time friends on here. Thanks for your comments!
My local vet talked briefly about weaning Lindy off of azathioprine, but I
really didnt want to hear it. Beings her liver numbers were a little high, I
thought I should at least think about it. I do fear a relapse and fear of the unknown is always out there. I'll keep Dr. Dodds in mind and will perhaps
talk to Dr. Houchins about it, more in depth.
A big hug to everyone from Lindy and me!
