Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Lexie

Please pray for little Lexie a Shih Tzu that has just been hospitalized in Arkansas. She has been exhibiting blotchy purple spots for almost a year that a Vet diagnosed as a rash. Now she has been diagnosed with AIHA so it sounds like it could be Evans to me. My niece owns a grooming/boarding business and was boarding her when she presented with the usual symptoms. Her parents are 6 hours away so hopefully our thoughts and prayers will keep her in good hands until they can get home.
Thanks

My niece has said they have ruled out AIHA and Tick related diseases? I am really concerned because as this dogs groomer my niece has observed the purple/blue splotches on her skin for over a year that I think indicates low platelets? Her PCV was 16 when admitted then dropped to 10. They started her on steroids and Vit K, Then until her parents got home my niece had to take her from one clinic to another one 45 mins away while she was still receiving the blood transfusion and hanging tubes from her sun visor etc. I don't know why they would want her moved while in the middle of a transfusion? They are doing 2 other tests that I don't know what for. They are thinking this was from some kind of trauma which as loved as this dog is doesn't make any sense and that she had possibly had a blood clot? Lexie is supposed to be coming home today and I haven't heard if they have diagnosed anything. I sent her some info on zinc to see if she might have been exposed to that? It sounds like too many Vets playing the guessing game?

Penny,
Ask this vet to do an immediate blood test (and send it to a specialty lab) for Von Willebrand's disease. There are several blood clotting factors missing in the blood that can be causing this problem. Not all of the factors are extremely severe, there can be "grades" of clotting problems. Here is an excellent website to read about it as I don't have time to explain it simply. Please ask any questions here and I will try to answer them later.
