Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - lessons learned and...... waiting

Kahlu and I went in to the vet this morning for blood and urine draws. My vet was not there and Kahlu was taken to the back for it. lesson #1 If you think your dog is calmer with you, go along! I always do, what was I thinking? Result, they could not believe how much he struggled. The bladder was not full enough for a urine draw. Lesson #2 For this, take the dog in first thing in the morning, before he has a chance to go outside and pee. I should have known that one too, since we have done this before. I called them back, to make sure they put the right medications on the form for Dr. Dodds, then they called back to say that the tyrotab needs to be given between 4-6 hours before the draw. So we had to do the whole thing again. Lesson #3 if you have your vet send blood to Dr. Dodds, make sure you read the form as well and you know what needs to be done. The blood draw in the afternoon went well (I had learned lesson #1!) and since they had all that blood from the morning I asked for a PCV (for free) It came back at 50, 10 up from 5 days ago. I also had the vet palpate his spleen, it seemed normal to her. So go figure.....
The waiting game begins, it will probably take till Friday before i hear something. I will keep you posted, keep those fingers crossed!

Brigitte you crack me up! I'm so extremely happy for both you and Kahlu that his PCV is back up to 50. The weight on your shoulders must've fell right off!

As far as trying to take urine from the bladder I also learned the same lesson you did. I let Tessy wander around outside to do her business without even clueing in and guess what she did.....yep....she had a pee. I ALWAYS insist on being there when they do tests or draw blood. Again....I also had to learn the lesson.
Tyrotabs? Are they thyroid meds? I always just wrote down how many hrs before the blood draw Tessy took hers.

In the meantime everything is crossed. Tessy's got her paws crossed also (literally).
