My springer has developed some lesions on her nose and pads, they look like cuts to her nose - as if she has scuffed her nose on something and taken the top layers of skin off. Her pads look the same. She had them biopsied yesterday and the lab results will take a week to come back. I was just wondering if this sounded familiar to anyone whose doggy has/is suffering with IMHA? We are thinking that it could be another immune disease (like systemic lupus) or perhaps a secondary effect of the disease (or the potent drugs). It would be great if it came back as some underlying cause of the IMHA (wishful thinking!). Would love to hear from anyone who recognises this symptom from their own experiences. Best wishes everyone.

Libby- Chloe has developed large ulcers on the sides of her tongue, one large ulcer under it, and a lesion on the side of her lip. She has been on 300 MG of cyclosporine and on prednisone for the last 4 months for IMHA. No idea where the lesions came from but the vet put her on clindamycin and the ulcers seem to be shrinking. I also thought about using gentian violet on them but will need help to wrestle with her to dab it on. I think some other dogs here on the panel have also developed lesions. Check through the recent posts on Chloe to see who responded about lesions. Best of luck in the IMHA fight. Cheri and Chloe

Libby, Side effects of cyclosporine. I am time pressed today, so here is a bunch of stuff to read. patrice http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_cyclosporine.html "SIDE EFFECTS The most common side effect seen with cyclosporine is upset stomach (appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or all of these). Upset stomach occurs in one dog in three but generally resolves within one week even if the medication is continued. Alternatively the drug administration frequency can be dropped until the GI issues resolve and then brought back up to the more usual dose. Dogs infected with the papilloma virus may develop large numbers of papillomas (warts) while on cyclosporine. Dogs on cyclosporine may develop a thicker coat than usual and more shedding than usual can be expected. *Other side effects reported include: heavy callusing on the footpads, red/swollen ear flaps, and proliferation of the gums. ****When cyclosporine was discontinued, these findings either resolved or improved.****" http://www.nature.com/jid/journal/v93/n2/abs/5613264a.html "All twelve Beagle dogs undergoing long-term therapy (26 weeks) with the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine-A (30 mg/kg), developed cutaneous papillomatous hyperplasia. By week 7 all dogs developed generalized lesions distributed over the entire body. These occurred as irregular, oval, sessile, unpigmented, firm masses. The incidence and severity of the skin lesions varied among dogs and anatomic site, with no correlation to the blood level of cyclosporine. Microscopic analysis revealed that the epidermis formed short papillary folds on broad fibrovascular stalks and was hyperkeratotic and acanthotic. Mild hyperplasia of hair follicles and sebaceous glands was also evident. A mild diffuse infiltrate of lymphocytes and plasma cells was present in the papillary dermis. No histopathologic changes typical of papilloma-virus infection were identified, nor were papillomavirus group-specific antigens or viral DNA detected. ***Other cutaneous side effects included hyperkeratosis of footpads, increased growth of hair and nails, and hyperkeratinization of the haired skin of the prepuce. All cutaneous lesions regressed spontaneously within 8 weeks following termination of cyclosporine administration. The hyperplastic lesions may have resulted from the action of cyclosporine via the T-lymphocyte system. Conversely a direct action of this drug on epithehal cells may have stimulated proliferation and keratinization.****"

Lesions turned out to be a fungal infection. They are improving really well with treatment.
