Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Left over medications-What to do?

Hello all,

When I lost Acadia it was very difficult. But I knew that my excess meds might help another animal. I passed my medications along and all three pets I helped, by sharing that medicine, are on the road to recovery. Yeah!!!!

If you have medication you wish to share, please contact me and I will put you in touch with someone who can use it. As we all know, this is a costly disease. If you want to donate it anonymously (yikes, I had to look up that word), please let me know and I will help.

AND, if you have been struggling with this disease, and can use a little bit of help with the medication cost, please let know so I can match you with someone who might have the dosage you are using.

Regards,
Janet

Our 4 yr old beagle/cocker mix male dog just passed away five days ago from IMHA. It was sudden. No real warning. We are still in shock and grieving. I was wondering what to do with the leftover medicines and was going to check with our vet about that. I would like to recycle it somehow (if legal) to help others.

Also, I would like to learn more about this disease through this forum as well as hear from others who have lost a dog to this awful disease. Here is Stokley's history...

He was a neighborhood stray that we took in mid-October of 2005. Named him Stokley for Brandon Stokley (then with the Colts, now a Bronco). He was suffering from a bad ear infection and hookworms and had not been neutered. We got him healthy, neutered, etc. although he was always prone to ear trouble and was always cold natured compared to our other 5 dogs, seeking to be under covers, blankets, seeking warmth.
His annual exam and shots were on October 23 and he seemed fine after that. During his annual our vet recommended a dental cleaning, so I got that scheduled for Nov. 2 (10 days after his annual). Didn't think anything of doing the dental so quickly after his shots and our vet didn't warn us differently either. We declined the pre-anesthesia bloodwork because he had always been so athletic and strong and healthy (we thought). Maybe the disease was there in a "dormant" stage then?? We'll never know. After the dental on Nov. 2 he was never the same. Tired all the time, vomited alot, poor appetite, didn't want to play with the other dogs. Just not himself. A week after the dental he started to stagger and "collapse" (plop) without passing out. We got him to the vet on emergency visit Nov. 11 and he passed away on Nov. 15 after several days of the usual medicines prescribed for IMHA. He had slight jaundice Sunday and he become extremely jaundiced Thursday morning. Also, there was clumping or clotting of his blood cells all along (autoglutination??). Jaundice and clumping of RBCs were bad omens from what I've read. We tried to get him up to our nearest university vet hospital (University of Illinois) but he passed away on the way up there. We did leave his remains there for necropsy and the results are pending.

I appreciate any replies to this post. And also what I can do with his leftover meds. Thanks.

Cathy,
I am sorry that you lost Stokley and I am sure you were like most of us still trying to rationlize how something so awful could happen so quickly. If you have not looked at Joanne's site yet please do as it will help you understand and as you said further educate yourself about AIHA/IMHA

I had a necropsy done on my dog as well but it really didn't answer many of my questions. I wish they would do full autopsys like they do on people. I am so sorry for your loss.
