Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Layla Update

Hi all.

First, I wish U all had great results with your ‘lil angels.
2nd, Layla (3 yr. old Labradoodle) is doing so much better! (Thank God.) Her last CBC test was all in normal range & Dr. Hammer (Hematologist) discontinued the Pred!
She is playing & happy & coming back 2 her former spunky self!

But the Pred. has taken a toll on her skin & coat. Been giving her Omega 3 & Vit. E.
Any other suggestions? Gave her the 1st bath since Xmass, started w/ conditioner, then moisture shampoo, then conditioner again. She was so happy! (Taught her to “shake” her whole body, to get most of excess H2O off in shower.)
But still her coat is so dull.

She went from 40 lbs. to 55 lbs. in 6 weeks! Can’t wait for the weight to come off, any ideas here?

Thank U all 4 the great advice & concern.

Also! What do U think about the Dr. continuing the Azathioprine “long term”? The side effects said it can CAUSE Anemia????

Any info. Appreciated!

Hi T and Layla,

Congrats on great progress. We are also now off of Pred, and doing Aza every other day. You are on the right track with the omegas and vitamin E, Tiggs is also having skin issues and weight gain, which was caused by him becoming Hypothyroid as a result of his IMHA- so, my advice would be to have the vet run a thyroid panel. It's very common in IMHA dogs, and would explain the weight gain and dull coat. Make sure she is getting good exercise if she can tolerate it and we also backed off a little bit of Tiggs' morning meal.

We also just brush him now every day to rake up the sluffing skin and coat and we do weekly baths now, which help.

Best of luck, keep us posted!

Hi Mel,
Thanks! Unfortunately "I" had to suggest testing 4 thyrod problems 2 my vet (after researching this sucky disease). Layla was "low-normal" & they put her on "Soloxine", been on it, 1 month. And "I" had to suggest another test 2 see where it stands now. Will see nxt. wk. Hopefully we can discontinue it.
Everone raves about my Vet. (to the possitive)- but it makes me wonder-why do "I", clueless (medically) have 2 suggest these things???
It pisses me off!
Anyway, best 2 U with your 'lil baby! Tiggs.
They R all Angels!

Terese,
Great job and congrats to both you and Layla from Tessy and I. It must be a huge relief to be off the Prednisone. I can barely wait to get there myself. Luckily I haven't had any skin or coat problems with Tessy yet. Hopefully I never do! She gets fed a diet rich in vitamins and omegas so maybe that's why she is alright for now.

I hope you both well and pray for the best.

Hi T,
Great news for Layla! Interesting about the aziathioprine, Dr Dodds had us stop the aziathioprine first and waiting to see if Holly holds off of it and if so maybe then we can reduce more on the prednisone.

Does Layla like sardines? I give Darcy two every day and she loves them. The holistic vet said that this is fine, even with the 1/2 tsp. omega 3 fish oil I give her. Sardines don't have high levels of mercury, because they are harvested while they are young.
