Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Kent Update April 08 :)

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to post an update for Kent, we just got his lab results back from Hemopet last night.
His liver values have come down again over 50% so are just above normal now - yippee! His BUN has come down from 83 to 58, likely the subq fluids are helping. His creatinene has unfortunately gone from high normal to above normal - 1.6 to 2.0 and i am not happy about this and hope we can bring it down and that his kidneys are not declining.

Otherwise, his hematocrit is 32, similar to last months - it seems to be holding in low 30s, and we are reducing pred again down to 5mg a day (yippee!). We hope to be able to lower the imuran next month from 25mg EOD to 15 EOD. I hope when we do lower the imuran that it will help his kidneys.

He is feeling good overall, his liver seems to be shrinking (yea!)and he has recently started jumping on the couch again! We had a consult with a holistic naturopath/chinese med/acupuncture vet and have added some supplements, including a jerky made out of sea cucumbers which is really really good for him - lots of MSM, chondroitin, etc for mood and joints. He doesnt realize its a vitamin as it is jerky and tastes good so he screams for it!

Christine,
What excellent news! Holding in the 30's is fine. We saw the internist Monday and he said 35 was a grand number. All your other numbers are falling right in line with recovery.

I remember vividly the first day Chance was able to come upstairs and hop on the bed to sleep with me. Life has become much more normal around here after that major change.

Time for Mommy to get a little break, I think. Need to have a day for a movie and a massage. Good work on your part!
My best,
Patrice

Christine -- great to hear that Kent is doing well and that you're seeing him act the way he used to do. I am intrigued at the "sea cucumber." Have never heard of this. What can you tell me and where do you get such a product?

Hi Patrice, Brenda,
Patrice, thank you so much for your note - means alot to me.
Brenda, i got it at the naturopath vet but i think you can find it elsewhere - its:
called "Sea Jerky" "the flexibility product for dogs with MSM and Omega 3 fatty acids". The brand is sea jerky. Its a gold bag with a big sticker on the front, about 30 sticks per bag. kent is 35 lbs, so should get 1/2 of one a day, but he tends to scream for more, so will get 3 a day then none for 4 days. At the top of the bag it says Sea cucumber formula with sea chondroitin and glucosamine. As i look at the ingredients they may not be ideal (first ingredient is wheat, then beef, then fish meal (sea cucumber), but he sure likes them. It comes in chicken flavor too. Its about 24 dollars for a 30 stick bag. I told myself it was a supplement not a treat when i bought it... :)
Its made by Coastside bio resources in Maine, 1800 732 8072, or www.seacucumber.com.
There are probably several other similar jerkys around.

Christine: Congrats so much on your baby's success! You recently responded to me about excercise w/ your dog so I apprecaite the kind advice. This board is wonderful, isn't it? Truly alot of caring folks on here. Keep hanging in there with Kent.
