We got back from our 2 week trip to Reno last night. Kahlu was a trooper traveling and we had so much fun in the parks in Reno. I had no clue, but there is actually a beautiful river and I spent a whole week there with my dog, walking, swimming, playing ball and reading while, my husband took a course. I left all the work I needed to do in the bag for when i get back. How much better can a holiday get? The traveling went very well too, the temperatures were very bearable and Kahlu seems to be more and more like himself. I never even needed the cooling vest. Today we went to the vet and should get blood results tomorrow. My regular vet is not in till Monday so I have some time to stew over the next reduction. I am sure you all know how that is. Kahlu is now on 2.5 mg pred. 2x per day and 25mg aza every day. Somehow I feel we should reduce the aza. The only side effect he has now is hair loss and skin problems. Small bumps that brake open and then crust over. Mainly on his legs. I have treated it with vitmin E oil and that seems to help a bit. I just have a feeling that it is the aza. My question is, how do you cut these already small pills? I read something about compounding, does that mean grinding down? I guess he would go on either ca 18 mg every day or about 35mg every other day. Or can the aza been reduced by 50% or do the same rules apply as with the prednisone? How low do the doses have to be before you reduce or stop with the stomach protectants and supplements? Thanks for any advice, Best wishes Brigitte and Kahlu

Hi Brigitte, So glad you and Kahlu got a break, that is wonderful, and always much needed. We used to get Tiggs Aza compounded, we ordered it from a human compounding pharmacy, that means they will specially make the dose then put in in a gelcap. Tiggs stayed on the stomach protectants even when he was on very low doses of drugs. We didn't d/c the Pepcid until he stopped all meds for IMHA. The skin stuff plagued us too, I am not sure if it was Aza or the hypothyroid, but now that he is off of Aza and on thyrotabs, his coat looks better than ever. Wishing you continued health for Kahlu! melissa and tiggs

Good to hear you and Kahlu got to spend some quality vacation time together. Hope you both had tonns of fun. I was wondering the same thing myself about the aza and compounding it. I was also wondering about the stomach protectants also. My original thought was do I reduce the stomach protectant doses once the meds get to low levels? Still don't really know. Let me know what you find out. Glad Kahlu is acting more like his old self. High paws from Tessy. Johnny & Tessy
