Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Kahlu update june 11

It was blood results day gain today. We have done the 2 week routine for 2 months now. The results were ok, same as last time RBC 5.6 and HTC 0.43. His WBC are still elevated at 18.2. He is still on antibiotics for UTI until Saturday. We will then wait a week and do an other culture. I am disappointed that his liver enzymes did not come down more. They are at ALP 821 (from 843)ALT 745 (from 726) AST 66 (from 58) and GGT 814 (from 838) So some of these values even went up a bit. We will leave the Azothiaprene at 25mg and lower the pred from 10 to 7.5 still in 2 equal doses per day.
Kahlu's energy level seems to slowly go up and he is an over all happier fellow. He is wagging his shaggy rat tail for all of you!
Best wishes

Great job Kahlu! Staying stable is great. Hopefully the liver enzymes will eventually start to fall. At least they are not spiking higher. Maybe it is the azathioprine causing a liver toxicity. The good thing is that the amylase and lipase are mot high. This'll at least rule out any pancreatic diseases.

High-dose, longterm glucocorticoid use causes a toxicity in the liver in as little as a couple of days after administering these drugs so perhaps once the gluco drugs are reduced even lower the enzyme values will drop to within normal ranges.

Has his albumin and BUN levels been normal?

From what I've read and heard....most liver damage is totally reversable with time once the drugs are discontinued. I wonder if thyroid meds can affect liver enzymes. I'm assumeing all drugs will to a degree but I think I remember reading somewhere something about this.

You know the weird thing is that Tessy's liver enzymes were high up until we added the cyclosporine. I wonder if cyclosporine has an effect on liver enzymes. I also did a full diet change with her at that time and started adding more fish to her diet. Since then her liver enzymes have been all normal.

In any case....I'm so glad to hear he is getting his energy levels back. I wait daily to see Tessy's come back. Yesterday was her first pred reduction so maybe it's just around the corner.

Give some hugs to Kahlu from me. Tessy wags her tail back at him.

Johnny,
We have done lots of fish with no change for Kahlu's liver enzymes. Kahlu also gets Omega3, high quality milk thistle and Zentonil (SAM-e) His albumin and BUN levels are in the normal range. I try not to get too worried about his liver enzymes. Once we are on a very low dose of prednisone for a while and they are still that high we might have to do some more investigating.
Thanks for your thoughts,

Brigitte, that's probably exactly what I'ld do. I think I've read somewhere that a high albumin and a low BUN is a sign of more serious liver issues. I've been trying to find where I read that just to cure my curiosity but do you figure I can find it. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyhow, all the best to you and Kahlu.

High paws from Tessy. Have a great weekend.
