Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Kahlu and prednisone

I just got of the phone talking to our vet. She feels if Kahlu can tolerate the prednisone without throwing up and too much diarrhea, we should keep him on the higher dose until he is a bit closer to a normal PVC (hematocrit) Also it has only been a week since he is on Azathiopine (50mg). She explained that his fairly high (low normal) PVC of 37 two weeks ago, was because he was dehydrated. I went in that evening because his stools were water thin, so that makes sense. So we keep chugging along, keep him on the same 70mg pred. dose and do a bloodtest this Friday or Tuesday next week. Kahlu has moments of a bit more energy and I think he has put on a bit of weight. His hip is still clicking and he is sleeping most of the time. We are thinking of all of you with sick dogs and thank you to all of you who have input, answers and encouragement for us who are in the midst of these hard times!
Take care, Brigitte and Kahlu the couch potato

Tessy puked a couple of times when we gave her prednisone. I'm not sure if it was the pill or somehting she ate. She's been keeping it all down lately now though. I've been giving her a scoop of icecream with it (hiding the pill in the icecream). She LOVES icecream.
Anyhow, I hope and pray that Kahlu gets better.
Good luck,
Jonathan

Brigitte, hang in there. I know it's hard to watch our dogs suffer from side effects of the meds but once you are able to start reducing, you will notice a difference. Sounds like Kahlu is recovering nicely.

Hi Jonathan,
Poor Tessy! What works for Kahlu for giving the pills are pill pockets. You can get them at the pet food store. They smell so good that Kahlu comes running when he hears me opening his pill box! I call him my druggie now. Some people also use a bit of "rollover". Make sure Tessy also gets something like Sucralfate to protect her stomach. The prednisone is very hard on it. Kahlu ended up taking two more medications for his stomach (misoprostol and ranitidine), because he had constant diarrhea and once even threw up blood, because he had ulcers. I also added Forti Flora, a pro biotic to his food, of course talking to the vet first. And then he takes Milk Thistle, that is good for the liver who has to work so hard now.
Best wishes to you and Tessy, Brigitte
