Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Just checking in

Hello to all. It has been a while since I have been on the board. I want to send my condolences to all those who have suffered losses. It is so difficult to read, and my heart aches for each of you. And then, my congratulations to all those that are still fighting away. Matilda was diagnosed March 17, 2008, and it has truly been a long long year. I just wanted to check in, and to update on her progress - because I know that for me, when things looked bleakest it really helped to hear about those dogs that were doing well, so hopefully Matilda' report can offer some encouragement to those just beginning the battle. She has been completely off the prednisone since mid July (we tapered off very slowly). The vets just re-evaluated her case, and have decided that we will try to get her completely off all drugs. As of this Friday she will have been off the Azathioprine for 3 weeks. I am still waiting for the last blood test results, but so far everything looks great. It will be a month or so before we attempt to reduce the cyclosporine (Atopica) - she is currently on 25mg every other day. It is amazing how much easier feeding time is, without all the pills and the long chart to be sure the amounts and pills were right. In looking back over the past year, I just never thought we would get here. I just wouldn't allow myself to look that far into the future - but wow. Matilda is just such a little joy - and is so happy these days. She is back to her funny, bouncy and active self. So - when I read some of your stories, my heart aches for you - and I feel so very very blessed.
Here is to a great new year for everyone. I will continue to keep each of you in my prayers. And a special thanks to Joanne for your website and information - and to Steve and all those that are helping to raise funds to fight this crazy disease!
Have a Happy and Blessed New Year!
Jeanne & Matilda (and Sadie and Bentley)

Jeanne, I am glad Matilda is doing well! What a great way to start the new year. Thanks for sharing, it gives me hope to hear everyone's successes as I continue this fight with my Molly. :) Amy
