Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - johnny?

Hi JOhnny:

You responded to my email last week re Crosby. Even though he passes away I am so concered about what caused his illness.

I did email Dr Dodds and she was very kind to repond indicating that there is a series of events which occur being first the genetic predisposition and then a triggering event.

You mentioned Febreeze your opinion of a triggering event. I find it very strange that you mention this as I got 2 Febreeze luminaires about 1 onth before this. I had not even thought I brough any chemicals not my home and my dog could not have eaten onions as. I never thought of a air freshener being toxic. What made you suspect Febreeze as a trigger as I find it very stange that I had used on of these lately.

I am beginning to suspect that Crosby had a thyroid problem and then a triggering event.

I am going to get another American Cocker Spaniel and would like to know much more about this illness so that I can take every precaution possible.

Hi Elaine, we had an amer. cocker, Tori she had this terrible disease 10 of her 12 yrs. The line she was out of was the Homestead line which was fraught with this bad gene, or weakness of a gene, they did a big study on it, this was back in the early 90's, the vets had hardly any info, so we just plodded on until one relapse I was in the vet's office reading doggy books when i came across Joanne's little add asking if anyone had heard of this aiha, which her dog Meisha had been diagnosed with, then began this wonderful place, there was a fellow named Al's his cocker had just died of the disease, and these folks just started to come on the forum. At that time there were so many cockers that a vet from the Duke vet clinic decided to do some numbers, and found that this Homestead had a very hi predisposition to this auto immune disease aiha and imt. If you do get another cocker, which we did I was very careful about the breeding in the dogs, so far, we have been ok, breeders, some of which don't like to discuss the disease, the better ones will be forthcoming and will tell you the truth. This disease still has really no rhyme or reason that is why it is so difficult to predict. Take care, fellow canuck Bev

Elaine, I can't say for certain that it was Febreeze that triggered Tessy's case, only strong suspection. While most cases are considered idiopathic (no *known* cause) there's ALWAYS a trigger whether we know what it is or not. There's been LOTS of discussions across the internet regarding the usage of Febreeze and air fresheners in general making pets sick but this is all anecdotal I believe. I haven't really done a whole lot of research into it to be honest.
I'm a strong believer that ANY chemical or drug can easily trigger an autoimmune response in an already predisposed animal...whether it be genetically predisposed or nongenetically related. I won't even use windex in my house anymore. No chemicals or cleaners at all!!! I use vinegar and water for just about everything nowadays and am finding that even *I* am feeling better and can breath easier!
For air fresheners I actually have a small pot that I leave onthe stove with a little cinnamin and lemon juice mixed with water. Leave it on low and the smell goes all through the house (and I LOVE the smell of cinnamin!!!).

Bev nailed everything right on the nail!! I'd love to see the studies from the Duke vet or the Homestead information. First I heard this! Cocker Spaniels and Poodles, IMO, are at higher risks from what I've seen but Old English Sheep Dogs, Shih Tzus, and Greyhounds are also well documented. I'd bet Joanne probably knows more on the breeds than me. They also say that the lighter coated dogs (buffy coats) are more at risk...as are middle aged females.

How exciting to get another cocker! They're my favorite breed!
