Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Jewels Tests results are in!

Well Jewel went in Friday for her blood work finally after 4 weeks....and her red blood cell count went from 11 to 19 after the blood transfusion to now 32.9!!! And her platlet count went from 32,000 to 42,000 after the transfusion to 898,000 and her WBC is high and bone marrow is making lots of red blood cells. My vet said "so there must have been a component to the tick borne disease in her then" and I thought to myself, You think! The tetracycline I requested he put her on within a week made her dramatically better....that after all the research and how compromised the pred and azathioprine make the success of that drug in their system I started decreasing her dose myself....pred down to 30mg and then 20 mg by week 3 and the azathioprine from 2x '/day to 1x/day (50 mg) by week 3 her hind legs and muscle wasting had already started to reverse itself (and I am sure the Fresh meat and fresh antioxident filled veggies played a big role too!) in From the beginning I upped her multivitamin to 2 per day and her glucosamine vitamnin to 2 per day plus when I mixed hard dog food at all with her food I got the new Iams Premium Protection with lots of antioxidents and vitamin E and Carotene and Glucosamine/Condroitin. Anything to help strengthen the her legs! In week 2 I started also giving 1 500mg vitmain C vitamin, 500mg of Vitamin D and 600mg Calcium daily and continue to give that too her every day. My vet was AMAZED at how she looked and seemed surprised that she was still alive for that matter. That is because I stayed positive and went with my gut feelings finally and since I have limited financial resources I researched what cancer and aids patients have done holistically with their medcial treatments and the base knowledge was changing food to the healthiest way of living and antioxidents! So I thought my dog was on deaths door I am going to try what I can, I could not make it worse than it had been and the outcome I felt my vet thought would happen....so I thought I would give her what I would give myself if I thought I were dying with the same disease I thought she had. And I don't know if you all believe in a higher power or God or the power of healing but I do and every day I lay my hands on her and ask for His Ultimate Power of Divine Healing I know can only come from Him and envision the white light of healing going through her whole body as I rub my hand over her body and especially in the areas where urgent healing is needed such as hind legs, tummy where organs that can be enlarged due to medicines...eyes that became infected with conjunctivits....etc! And Lots of Love like we all give to our wonderful furry cuddlebugs! She is now running though not far and jumping and going up and down the stairs! I don't think, no I know the vets do not have all the answers to these diseases because they are all searching for the answers too...listen to Your inner voice too...sometimes God is trying to tell us what we can do if we be still and calm enough to hear the answers...and believe me in my everyday life I am never still and calm enough for anything but I have had to learn to be for now! Many blessings to you all, and I too will pray for the power of healing for your furry lovable creatures!

Pam, it's wonderful to hear that Jewel is doing so well. She's lucky that you had the courage to trust your instincts and your faith. I'm glad it's worked out well for you, and I hope Jewel continues to improve.

Pam, Your post is uplifting. My little Beagle Darcy has non-regenerative anemia; has had one transfusion (when her PCV got down to 13); was put on 30mg prednisone; last week her count was 19 and the internist added in azathioprine. Like you are doing for Jewel, I am giving Darcy all the nutrional supplements I can to bring about her healing. I, too, believe in the power of God's healing touch and I lay hands on my dog and pray every day that Jesus will heal her. The internal specialist doesn't seem to think much of the supplements, but I told her that I would try anything to help my dog. Our regular vet agrees with me about the supplements and about the power of prayer. I take Darcy back to the specialist for a recheck of her blood levels this Thursday. I pray your little Jewel continues to improve. God gives us these special little gifts and, like I have posted before, His word tells us that a righteous man cares for the needs of his animals. As long as He entrusts them to us, we must do all that we can to make their short little lives healthy and happy.

Thank you both Karens!
I too will pray or the power of healing for Darcy, and just keep doing what you think is best because there are no definitive answers in these diseases and not enough funding for research, so it is trial and error for them (vets) too. Even specialists don't have all the answers and can misdiagnose. When I found out through research that tick borne diseases and parasytic diseases are misdiagnosed up to 90% of the time as either straight thrombocytopenia and Hemalytic anemia....I said NOT MY DOG....I witnessed the ticks myself and one had burst and was broken open crusted over and still the head was attached between her butt and her tail. Some people don't even know a tick had transferred a disease because they had already detached after feeding. So I asked my vet if we treat her with the tetracycline will it hurt her...and he said no...so I said then lets treat her like she has THAT disease and the other two are the side affects of that disease. If it doesn't hurt them and they all know that dogs can test negative and still have the tick borne diseases...why are they not just giving them the doxycycline dose that would kill it if they had it. I just don't understand???? Some of these tick diseases such as Ehrlichiosis are considered aids of the canine world...and do we know how to cure aids....do experts.....NO THEY DON'T....and do people with AIDS sit by and wait for a cure....no most are proactive about extending their lives with nutrition, supplements, and vitamins, and exercise, positive thinking and prayers for healing...and have successfully extended their lives 10,20 and even 30 years. So keep reading and getting informed...that is one of good blessings of the internet!!!
Prayers of healing to Darcy...I will envision for her tonight!
