| Gail, SD Jen, I am so sorry to hear your dog was diagnosed with this disease. I started a New Thread for you so that you will receive responses from those that are on this Forum. I would advise you to read all you can about this disease so that you can ask informed questions. Treating this disease immediately is very critical! Google - Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and you will find all sorts of information. Take care, you will find lots and lots of information on this Forum. The critical issue I was advised very quickly is to find out if your veterinarian is experienced with treating this disease. If not, you must find one that is. This disease is treatable but again, timing is critical. Again, take care - read the blogs and you'll see the many success stories with this disease. Gail |

| Wow, I am so sorry to hear this... I am thinking and praying for you. I am also from Northeastern Ohio, outside of Akron. If you don't mind telling me, who is treating your dog? I had two dogs with AIHA, so I just wanted to know how your vet does in treating this, just in case I have this come up again. In short, PCV is Packed Cell Volume, also called Hemocrit. The number that you have obtained, 7, represents the total percentage of your dog's blood that is made up of red blood cells, the rest will be liquid/plasma. So, in short, this means that your dog's blood consists of 7% red blood cells, while the other 93% is liquid. Your dog's immune system is the reason for this happening, it is attacking your dog's red blood cells. PCV needs to be preferably in the range of 37-55, depending on size/breed. Vet's here will usually do transfusions when PCV goes below 15, and definitely when they go under 10. There are better resources out there on the web, like Meisha's hope website that Penny provided for you. I hope that everything works out for you, I'm hoping and praying for you! |
