Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Jaspers results are in......

His rbc has raised only 0.3 to 5.8 since his pred reduction 2 weeks ago. Whilst being at the bottom range for a healthy dog there is evidence from the pathologist that the hemolysis has started to happen again as there were a few suspect cells.

He went down from the 20mg split between morning and night to 10mg once daily two weeks ago. The vet wanted to keep him on the 10mg for another month, but I queried as to wether it would be better to raise the pred slightly.

So we have compromised and he will go onto 7.5 mg morning and night for the next month.

I do have to say I thought he was initially reduced too much.... down to half his dose, but I also wonder whether Jasper has picked up on the stress levels in the house what with everything happening with my mum......!!!!!

Its quite possible.....plus the fact he has had a slight infection and been on antibiotics!

Hi Jackie,
They dont cope with stress well, perhaps because we are messing with their adrenal hormones. The infection is also a stressor.
At least the rbc has not gone down; cross fingers that the suspect cells are one offs!

Boy has just had his low-cal lunch of half an apple, sweet potato, broccoli and a small amount of dog food to give it a flavour, and hes chasing his empty bowl around the kitchen! He is now on 18mg pred every 2.5 days - vet wanted every 3 days, but I was too scared. As far as I can tell he's doing OK (we don't do blood tests unless it's critical). The reduction in pred has made a huge difference to his hind leg weakness and panting, he is much more comfortable.
Best of luck,
Hilary
