Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - jasper update....

Hello everyone,

Its a good day in the Williams household today!
Jaspers results have just come in. YIPPEEEE!!!

His RBC is 5.5 which is smack on the bottom range of what a normal dog should be. (5.5 to 8.5 )

The vet is very pleased with him but to err on the side of caution has decided to keep him on his current dose of 10 mg Pred twice daily for the next two weeks and then we will start the reduction!!!!!!!!

She wants to then reduce to 15 mg a day over the following month. She will see him for another check up and blood test in a month, which will be half way through his first reduction.

Does that sound right to those of you who are currently reducing medication?

For everyone who is struggling with this...there is light at the end of the tunnel.....I hope others out there have similar good news.

Excellent news!!
Ern is having another blood test tomorrow and if all is well we're going to start reducing his pred dosage. He had an off day yesterday and was sick a couple of times but when I called the duty vet he didn't seem too concerned and thought it was probably unrelated to his AIHA. When I got up this morning I noticed his wee was slightly orange and was a bit concerned until I remembered he was eating carrots yesterday! I've been stalking him round the garden this afternoon waiting for him to wee and the last one looks more normal coloured so I suspect the carrots were responsible. No more carrots for Ern!

Sue and little Ern,

I was quite concerned about some of Jaspers no 2's until I remembered he has carrots most days!!!!! A few days with no carrots and more greens sorted my worries out!!!! I think poor Jasper is getting a complex!! The kids think I'm mad, watching and inspecting poo!

Good luck for tomorrow we will be thinking of you with fingers crossed.

Tricia and Trixie,

I bet you won't have to wait that long, Jaspers results take anything up to 3 days to come back.... usually the following day!!!

Any improvement no matter how small is still an improvement.

Good luck

Jackie,

Great news for Jasper, Yipee is right! And better to do the reduction very slow rather then try to rush, don't want to risk the chance of relapse.

Hi Jackie,
So pleased Jaspar is improving. Boy (Border Collie) went from 18mg Prednisolone twice a day, to 25 mg once a day, then 25 mg every 2nd day. I noticed a huge improvement as soon as the pred was reduced, it was a great relief. Good luck!
