Jack's numbers are improving, however he is clinically getting worse. We have to carry him up and down the stairs every day. It is very hard for him to get up. His appetite is still down and picky. I am getting so depressed and frustrated. He just sleeps and lays around all day. At night, he is very restless but still just stays in one spot..

Robin, I am sorry to hear that he is not feeling well. This is most likely directly related to the prednisone at this point. If his blood values are rising then you are having success with his meds. I believe you said he is on cyclosporine? If so, then you should be able to begin decreasing the prednisone. The cyclo is taking over the immunosuppressive job now. When do you see your vet next time? Make sure they spend some time talking with you about the plan for decreasing the prednisone. If Jack is also being picky about food (and water?) intake, he is probably dehydrated and lacks calories to get through the day. Do what you can to ensure that he gets enough *somehow* to improve this. I was always able to coax Chance with really smelly things like fish or pan seared meats and liver. He would respond to scrambled eggs cooked in real butter. I use Pedialite popsicles to coax Chance to get some fluid, and once he eats one or two he is more likely to want to drink some water for me. I will be thinking about you today patrice

He goes to the vet on thursday, he hind is getting worse and worse. He has such a hard time going poop. He drags his butt around as he tries to walk. He is drinking fine but so picky eating. He is on Tramdol but do you think he could be in discomfort and that could be making him less hungry??? He is on Cephalexin (3000 mg) a day for his nasal infection. We also have a 16 year old chow/keeshound mix, who can no longer walk and refuses to drink plain water. So, we have to give her chicken stock (no salt) 4 cups a day, plus carry her up and down stairs for potty runs. It is so sad and stressful Thank you for your thoughts. Robin

Robin, Do you have anyone nearby to help you for awhile? If I were in this position, I might even call a local church to see if you can find someone to come give you a break during the day. You will get through this, but you need some help. my best patrice

My husband and I take care of the doggies. I sometimes call on my brother or father (however, dad is in his late 60's) for help. It is so stressful on us and I hate to let the doggies see it. Thanks. Robin

Robin I am sorry to hear Jack is not feeling to good. I agree with Patrice it sounds like he needs to have his pred reduced, Ginger's hind end actually make a creaking sound when she walked and once the pred was reduce it went away. Maybe you could call your vet on Tuesday and see what they say about beginning to reduce the pred. Also one of the side effects of tramdol is drowsiness. The tradmol could also make him feel nauseous which would explain why he does not want to eat. Tradmol made Ginger very tired and she also vomited when I gave her too much, would it be possible for you to cut down on your dosage of that? I know it is hard but try not to feel to stressed as I belive dogs can pick up on that and you need to be upbeat for Jack and your other furbaby, they need you to be strong for them. Try to think of the positive. Cheryl & Ginger

It is horrible he is pooping when he is laying down. I have him on potty mats in the kitchen. It will probably be less painful for him and me just to go on the mats instead of climbing all 13 steps.

I am sorry that you and Jack are still struggling with this. It can't get over how many ups and downs there are with this disease. I am happy Jacks numbers are going up though. That is a very good sign. Take care. I'm thinking of you and Jack...

Sorry to hear Jack is having mobility issues. You could always ask the vet about adding Knox Nutra Joint. Prednisone can wreak havoc on muscles and tissues and breaks down cartilage in a big way when used long term. This stuff will help to RE-BUILD cartilage and tissue. If you do decide to use this make sure you get the kind WITHOUT artificial sweeteners in it. The powder tastes kinda like milk in a way I've been told and moast dogs like the taste. This will not be an instant fixer though. It'll take time for the dogs to start feeling better. In any case you should talk to the doctor before thinking of adding it to see their views on it. Hope Jck takes a turn for the better soon. He's lucky to have you there for him. Hang in there...things will get better with time. Prayers and positive vibes from... Johnny & Tessy
