Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Jack, my Golden diagnosed today with Evans Syndrom

The love of my life, Jack, my 3 yr. old Golden Retriever, was just today diagnosed with Evan's Syndrome. Of course, I have never heard of this so did extensive research on the internet, thus found this site. Oddly enough, another Golden, female, 8 yrs. old, was brought in the same day as Jack with the exact same symptoms. Today I asked the vet about the other Golden - she was also diagnosed with ES. I am wondering if the topical flea tick, heartworm, rabies, etc on and on the drugs we are putting in our dogs, in the aspiration to be the "best", we've overdone it?

I plan to do more research and will try to set up a consultation in the morning with my vets. I also have to look at the financial expense, trama to Jack, side effects of the steriods. This "whatever the Hell it is" is not curable! There is no known cause. Only suppositions as to how dogs get this. Apparently, at least to me, it is a new thing and is just suddenly on the horizon?

Thanks for letting me vent - Mary

PS - I'm still in shock. This feeling is similar to the one I had when my daughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes -type 1 - at the age of 11 years old.

I am very sorry to read that your Golden has been diagnosed with Evans Syndrome. Here is a copy of Joanne's response to another person who's dog was recently diagnosed with Evans Syndrome too. I hope you find this information helpful.

When a dog has Evans syndrome he/she has autoimmune hemoltyic anemia/immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (AIHA/IMHA) and immune mediated thromboctopeina (ITP) at the same time. You can learn about AIHA/IMHA at my Web site which Samantha mentioned but this hotlink will take you there:

be sure to follow the links on the bottom of first page to many sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the Success Stories pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in regard to treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE. You might want to read about Casper who is the May 2008 Success Story who also was diagnosed with Evans Syndrome

You can learn about ITP at this Web site:

Mary,
I realize you are still reeling from the awful news you have just received but you have found a fantastic board for support. The important thing is to educate yourself on the disease and to be sure you have a Vet that is very familiar with treating it and positive about your options. Feel free to ask any questions. Just about anything you may experience has been shared by many on this board. It is one heck of a roller coaster ride but it can be beat. Just about everyone here does believe there is a connection to these diseases and all the chemicals that big Pharma promises us are safe. Know that you and Jack will be in a lot of thoughts and prayers.
Keep us posted.

You have found a great place with caring people. Tori was hit suddenly with IMHA last week and when she came home from the hospital, I searched AMHA/IMHA and have found others who understand our "roller coaster ride". My prayers are with you and your Golden One.

Blessings,
