Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Jack - Good news

Jack bloodwork improved in all areas. His WBC is down to 27 from mid 40's. RBC is up to 3.72 from 3.32. HCT is up to 31.5 from 27.5. Hemoglobin is up to 10.1 from 8.9. Platelets are 255. Reticulocytes are 93000. He is now taking thyroid supplements as per Dr. Dodds. Hopefully, the Atopica will continue to do the trick. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I will keep praying for all of you and your furbabies.

What type of blood tests are they taking to give you these numbers? is it a cbc or pcv? just curious. did you ever do the bone marrow test?
Pam USA

a pcv was done last nite and it was 32. However a cbc was also done and this morning report gave me these numbers. Yes we did a bone marrow biopsy all came back fine

Great work Jack....you also Robin. Feels great when the numbers start to improve.
Keep up the fight.

Did your bone marrow biopsy cost you around 700-900 dollars to do? this is what my vet is suggesting we do, but I just dont know if its worth the cost.
Pam USA

Pam, I went to a specialist (Dr. Hohenhaus - blood specialist) at Animal Medical Center in Manhattan and it only cost me $150.00 So, if they are quoting you that price I would look around. It sounds really too high. I am not sure what state you live in but it still sounds too high. But yes I would get it done because it can be very helpful in treatment.

This is fantastic news about Jack! I knew he could pull through. I am so very happy for both of you. Good news warms all of us. Take care.

Pam,

A BM biopsy should be no where near $700-$900. Its more like $125-$150. I know different states have different prices but I couldnt imagine it being that much in any state.

That is great news on Jack Robin. He is well on his way to a normal pcv!

They told me that it would be painful and they would have to put the dog to sleep during the procedure. It was a one day procedure. Is this something different?
Pam Illinois

Pam -
the procedure takes about a hour or two which includes recovery time. My vet knocked Jack out with an IV. She told me it was safe and he was not total out. He had no problems.

Robin,
I think this is wonderful news!

I have been thinking about you everyday since and I am wondering if you are still having to carry Jack up and down the stairs all day long? I have been so worried about you having to do this. I am hoping this improvement means he is now able to do this on his own.

Well done - you and Jack are an inspiration to those of us seeking that ultimate goal - remission - the dedication you have shown to Jack proves that this awful disease can be beaten, with patience, love and of course cyclosporine!!!

Take care of yourselves

Robin - I was happy to see that Jack is improving - that's fantastic! I hope his appetite is improving as well.

Pam - I also wanted to comment on your question re: the bone marrow biopsy. We had ours done at a veterinary specialty hospital in the northern suburbs of Chicago (not sure where you are in Illinois) and the cost was closer to the $800-$900 range so I suppose there are differences based on geography/available resources in the area.

Bonnie,

We are going to the Arboretum View animal Hospital. I think I may just ask around and see what the costs are, if I have to go this route.

Thanks for the info
