Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Izzy our toy poodle has AIHA

I am very thankful I found this site, I feel soo confused and alone in this awful disease. Izzy is 12 years old we have had her since she was 7 weeks. She became ill on Monday and had a blood transfusion, since then she has had oxyglobulin twice the dr said last night if she made it thru the nite that was good, well she did and today her count is up to 13 (was 12 this am) but she just looks sooo tired and weak. Is this normal. The dr did say she is making her own new red cells. She only weighs about 3-4 lbs now. We are soo scared yet hopeful.

Hi Harriet, I hope Izzy is ok. My Dog Cali was diagnosed on April 14th. Her first transfusion was Oxyglobulin & when I saw her on the 16th she looked terrible. I really thought I was going to lose her. They did another transfusion on the 16th, but used real blood this time. Real blood is suppose to last longer then oxyglobulin, but some Vets feel it is riskier to use. I was able to take her home on the 17th with a PCV of 27. It did initially drop the next week all the way to 15, but this week we are at 26. The real work starts when they get out of the hospital. I thought it was bad when Cali needed to pee every 2 hours, now she needs to go once an hour.
Good luck with Izzy, if they suggest another transfusion you may want to checkinto using door blood.

Prayers and good thoughts to you both and your best friends. We have gotten through that first event - Dec 2007....they can get through it...the first days are critical...keep faith.
Harriet...I will check the other threads, but I hope that Izzy is getting additional treatment outside of the transfusion, if this is IMHA....looking for the source, treating for infection...all that...
You will see wonderful guidance and truth in this site and Joanne's site was the BEST thing I found in those initial days.
Keeping you in our prayers.

Thank you all so much for the prayers, we did bring izzy home today pcv up to 15 from 10-12 doing better, still so very very weak, she is eating and drinking a bit is alert not up walking but watching us while she lays there. I think these are all good signs (I hope) I am so glad again to find out we are not alone in this endeavor.
Thanks

Harriet,
What drugs do they have Izzy on? If you haven't found your way to Joanne's site yet please go there as you will find a lot of info you will need in the coming days. You can link to it at the entry to this site where it says AIHA FAQ. Good luck.
