Wylie is on 20 mg a day and I am suppose to reduce it to 20 mg every other day for 30 days THis sounds like one of those grade shcool math questions, but is this too much at the start? Isnt every other day like a 50% reduction? I would think she would be reducing a bit every day like down to 15 mg a day from what I understand the way pred is supposed to be reduced. Thanks Laurie

Laurie, Are his numbers all good? Because per Dr Dodds, last month she gave us a reduction schedule for Holly, and she had us first reduce the aziathioprine to every other day for two weeks and then start the prednisone every other day on the off days of the aziathioprine for 2 more weeks. Of course she is only like 13 lbs and is only on the 2mg of prednisone. Linda

Laurie, When our vet started reducing Cooper's prednisone, he was originally on 40 mg. twice a day, he lowered it to 20 mg. twice a day for one week, retested his blood which continued to go up, then we were on 20 mg. once a day which ended yesterday. He will be re-tested tomorrow. Hopefully at that point we will start to lower the azathioprine. Kathi

Her PVC is 47 from last Saturday. My vet did this at the beginning of her relapse, He likes to have the dog on pred as short as possible which worries me, So on 11/1 he prescribed 20 mg azi a day for 7 days the every other day for 30. She is done with that and the pred at 20 mg every day for 30 days and then every other day for 30. Laurie

Laurie, Again, we have been playing the math game for many, many months, only because of worry about the retic count. Not any more, because Dr Dodds says not to worry about the retic count, so we are not even having it tested. If her numbers are good, which they sound like at 47 and you have already decreased for this past month and she was okay. I guess for me I would try it. Essentially that is what we are doing with HOlly a 50% reduction, going every other day and has worked. Even when we were at 10mg and slowing decreased like down to 7.5 and then 5mg, HOlly's PCV was always good, but at that time I was concerned because the retic count always kept going up. Last Saturday at 47 was that about the same, higher, lower, then the last test?? I think the vets as well as all of us want to get them off of the prednisone as soon as possible. Linda

My vet hasnt been in, so I sent an email to Dr Dodds, she said ideally what she would do is 20 mg one day 10 next, She said the 20 mg every other day is to give the adrenal gland a rest. And I am assuming the 10 mg she suggested is to not shock the gland too much reducing so the fine line of giving the the adrenal gland a break without causing complications and at the same time a lowering of the prednizone. I am so glad Holly is doing great. Unbelievable she was on 10 mg pred at 13# and here I am worrying about Wylie on 20 mg at 50# Laurie

Willow was on as much as 80mg of Prednisone and she's also 50 lbs--well she was 44lbs when she started the Prednisone. She went down the 10mg every other day for two weeks and then she stopped. My humble opinion, 20mg is too much to come to a complete stop from. The body is definately going to notice that. I'd ask Dr. Dodds that question if it were me.

Also, the blood should be getting checked before each reduction.
