Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Is carafate needed?

Is carafate needed when giving a 20 mg prednisone tablet to a 50 lb dog? Sunny hates it and I'm wondering if it is necessary. He gets pepcid once daily.

We give 1/2 tablet to Holly every morning and she is only getting 1mg of prednisone plus pepcid, and still manages to get sick if she eats something out in the yard even with her stomach protected. My feeling is yes to protect from bleeding ulcers from the prednisone, especially long term use of the prednisone, we have been at it for 17 months.

carafate is definately important in this process...
it coats the stomach and helps counter potential ulcers and side effects that come with giving doses of prednisone or cyclosporine.
i would not recommend taking your dog off carafate.

We just weaned Lola off the Carafate and she is only on the famotidine. She really hated it. The internist and rdvm felt that it was an okay decision for us. Lola takes Pred 7.5 in a.m. and 10 mg in p.m in addition to the azathioprine/atopica.
