Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - In memory of Mace

Mace would have been 6 years old today, a beautiful mix of Maltese, Pekingese, Dachshund) lost his battle with ITP yesteday. He went to the hospital last Sunday with dark stool and very weak energy. He had a large number of transfusions, prednisone, cyclosporine, Imuran (which I know never got a chance to work), Vincristine, and anti-vomiting / anti-ulcer mediations as well as pain killers. Mace clinged on to life and fought very hard and we fought, prayed, and tried everything we could to help him but ultimately, his body gave up yesterday after a bone-marrow biopsy. While his immune system was definitely supressed (very low white blood cell count in later blood tests), he was never able to produce platelets and continued to bleed very severely internally (abdomin, kidneys) and he showed signs of liver failure. Mace passed away yesterday at 2PM Hawaii time peacefully. We will miss him very much and are working hard to figure out exactly what happened to him so that if there is any way for us to use this learning to help any other dog avoid his fate.

I am so sorry to hear Mace lost his battle. I am sure he had quite a birthday celebration at the bridge with some of our dogs who were there to greet him. In the coming days I hope you can remember the happier times with your boy.

I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Mace. My little Daisy's fight ending on Friday evening and I know how hard it is at this time. But take comfort in knowing that you did everything you could for your baby. Mace and Daisy are playing and having fun at the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm sorry to hear about Mace. I know what you are going thru but I can tell you from experience it will get better. You will never forget Mace but the pain will subside with time. We lost Daisy two months ago to AIHA and we still expect her to in the house of in the yard when we go outside.
We struggled for seven months before she died so in some ways it was a relief to not worry daily about medications, eating, bowel and bladder habits etc. But having said that, I am envious of the owners lucky enough to have their dogs pull through.
Good luck, Ron

Dear Agsens Family,

I am so sorry to hear about Mace. I am sure he was loved very much and will be dearly missed. I know how hard the next few days, weeks, even months will be.....hang in there and know that you have people thinking about you.

I, like you, am on a mission to find out more about this awful disease and this website has been very helpful in helping our family deal with the loss of our beloved Roxanne.

Again, so sorry about your loss.
