Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Imuran Reduction

Hi,
My vet took Layla from 50 mg.Imuran (Azath.)every other day to once a week. Any thoughts on this?

(Also, what can I use topically for the dry skin & fur. Been doing flax seed oil, for a while & see no relief. I need to bathe her soon, any super hydrating, moisturizing products out there?)

Hi Terese,

It sounds like Layla has been doing well, so that's not too surprising that you are looking at a reduction. We have just gone from every other day for the last several months, to twice per week for the next two weeks, then we are stopping it altogether.

I use an oatmeal and aloe shampoo with a leave in cream rinse for Tiggs, and he also gets Omega supplements for his coat.

I would have a thyroid panel run, Layla may have developed hypothyroidism, which is very common in our IMHA kids. Tiggs skin was so bad, he had flaking dandruff, hot spots, staph infections, and blackened skin. Finally after thyroid meds, the bathing, and omegas, he's the softest dog out of the three in the house!

Glad to hear Layla is doing well.

PS
I did ask for Thyroid test (of course vet. didn't mention it 1st) & Layla's been on low dose of Soloxine .5 for a few months now.

Try Omegas and shampoo/cream rinse, but also have thyroid rechecked. Tiggs dose needed to be increased, and once we bumped it up, the skin drastically improved.

Good luck!
