Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - IMT v IMHA

Still trying to catch up with my vet to talk about Delilah's death. She did leave a brief message however and said that Delilah did not have IMHA but IMT (Immune Mediation Thrombocytopenia. The research I've done does not seem to differentiate between the two and most say these two conditions often occur simultaneously. The treatment for both appears to be identical. Anyone have more info on this distinction. It also appears from what little data I could find that the survival rate for IMT is higher than for IMHA.

Sharon,

AIHA/IMHA is a disease of the red blood cells while IMT/ITP is a disease of the platelets. Treatment for both diseases is basically the same except in some cases of IMT/ITP the vet will add another drug called vincristine:

Indeed the two diseases can occur simultaneously, when that happens the dog is said to be suffering from a condition called Evans Syndrome. I have seen several dogs that have developed IMT/ITP after they have had AIHA/IMHA and only a few who have developed AIHA/IMHA after having had IMT/ITP. Also in the cases I have seen it does appear that the survival rate for IMT/ITP is higher then the survival rate for AIHA/IMHA.

You might want to go to this page

and read a brief overview of both diseases. At the bottom of the page are a couple of links to more info on IMT/ITP.

Hi Sharon.

What my dog has and what Delilah had is low platelets. IMHA is low red blood cells. And, you are right the two are treated exactly the same way. And, the long road to recovery is the same which is why I can relate to all of these stories.

Willow was diagnosed in July and we are still fighting. In fact, I'm waiting for blood work results today to see how she's doing.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you want.
