Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - IMHA Diets

Hi Everyone,

Dr Dodds and I corresponded today regarding some of Henri's medical issues. One thing that came up was diet. I have seen discussion on this site of grain-free diets for IMHA but am not sure what people on this site do. Ever since we weaned Henri off of prednisone, he has been itchy. Dr Dodds said he should be on a grain-free diet but I am wondering what protein sources folks use. Henri is currently on a Lamb-Rice kibble.

Thanks for the help.

Warmly,
Ella

We feed a grain-free and raw diet to our girl with IMHA. We have used Red Meat Evo in the past. Currently she is on Taste of the Wild Salmon. Had to switch boecase of the other dogs had trouble with the protein Level in the Evo. Another has trouble with cooked chicken. Everyone is doing well on the Taste of the Wild.

For the raw portion of the diet we use BARF World and Nature's Variety frozen patties. We also feed chicken wings, chicken thighs and pork necks.

This year in the garden we had a bumper crop of zucchini so I froze a bunch of it. The dogs get that ground with spinach in there morning meals.

One of the store brands Dr. Dodds recommended to me over a year ago when my dog stopped eating, was "Eagle Pack Holistic Select". There is no dairy or wheat. It comes in Chicken, Duck, Beef, and a few others. It includes carrots, peas, potatoes & Kelp.
It's available at the pet food stores and my dogs have really loved it! I give them dry and mix in the canned food. Alex gets his pills hidden in a spoonful of canned food and when I say its "medicine time" boy all dogs and cats come running for it. It has made it so much easier to give his meds as before this I was always looking for cheese or bread or such to hide it in.

Thanks for the input.

I thought poultry was one of the most allergenic proteins. Are IMHA dogs suppose to avoid the more allergenic proteins?

Since I switched Henri from a poultry to a lamb based kibble he seems less itchy. We were thinking about doing allergy testing but Dr Dodds advised against intra-dermal testing. I have never had a dog with allergies so this is all new to me---let alone a puppy with IMHA and allergies. Ugh!

Any additional advise would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Ella

Ella,
We had Holly on Natural Balance Fish formula and our other dog on the chicken because she was allergic to the fish. Then Holly broke out in hives about 2 months ago, so we switched foods again and went to Calfornia Natural Lamb & Rice, as the lady in the pet store said that Lamb and Rice was less allergic then the chicken. Both our dogs are on the Lamb & Rice and seem to be doing okay on it. They are both grain free products also as suggested a year ago by Dr Dodds.

I feed Tessy a homemade combo consisting of haddock, sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach/swiss chard/beat greens, brocolli, teaspoon pumpkin, & a teaspoon of yogurt. Mixed all together with her cranberry extract and pet-tinic. This makes enough that I can give her two really good meals per day. I'll switch up some ingredients every so often so she'll have something different now and then but this is the just of it. Throughout the day she gets a mixture of beans, boiled hamburger and squash. This is what she usually gets her meds put in. Grain free all the way like Dr. Dodds says.

Who says our dogs don't eat better than we do?
