Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - I think Wiley's other retina is detaching

Hi everyone,
So 2 weeks ago the vet reduced Wiley's pred from 20 mg to 10 mg. I was just looking at his left eye and it starting to look funny. I think that one may be detaching also. I have never seen or heard anyone else having these optical problems with AIHA or Prednisone. I just don't understand this disease sometimes. Such a roller coaster. If this retina is detaching, I think it will only be a matter of time until he is blind. Just when I thought things were getting better.

Lisa I am so very sorry to hear that Wiley is having some eye problems.

Pred can cause eye problems. The Veterinary Drug Handbook states when talking about prednisone says and I quote:

“Prolonged corticosteroid use (both systemic or topically to the eye) can cause increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma, cataracts and exophthalmos”. (Exophthalmos is abnormal protrusion of the eye).

I have seen a few dogs with AIHA/IMHA who have gotten cataracts after pred usage but have not as yet heard of any dogs who have detached retinas because of pred use, but that it certainly may be possible. Pred indeed has lots of side affects but it does save the lives of many dogs with AIHA/IMHA.

I just remembered that Desi (Success Story Feb. 2007)

had detached retinas and went blind from them. As you can see from Desi's story, he was treated with prednisone drops so I have to wonder if the pred was the cause of the blindness.

In spite of Desi's blindness, IMHA and other problems he lived a very good life.

Hi Joanne,
But for some reason, it seems that his eye gets worse when they reduce the drugs. The last time they tried to reduce his meds is when the other retina detached. Is it possible that these drugs are actually protecting his eye rather than damaging it?

Lisa,

I am sorry this is not a question I am able to a answer for you. Have you posed this question to your vet? If he/she does not know the answer perhaps, he/she can consult with an specialist who might know the answer.

As I mentioned to you in my last post when Desi had detached retina's he was treated with prednsione drops. So perhaps the pred is helping but I am truly not qualified to answer that question. Hopefully your vet is and if not will consult with a specialist for you on behalf of Wiley. Many times these consultations can be done as veterinary courtsey one vet to another with no charge to you. My vet consulted with many specialist on behalf of my Meisha and I was never ever charged for any of these consultations.

I second the specialist route. This is something that should be checked by an appropriate doctor before it becomes worse. Ask your doctor for a referral if they can't help. You could also check out a TCVM who might be able to offer advise.
