Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - I have a question:

Got Tillie in for her heartworm/worm/flea check tonight..as long as they had the blood I paid an extra $15.00 to get a pcv check...hers was 56% and the other measurement was 6.6...WHAT IS THE 6.6 FOR?

She had no fleas but the tech said she would fix me up with some Frontline..I told her I don't do Frontline and that it has been known to cause AIHA in some dogs and they have passed away. I had my holistic spray that I use with me...I think she was like rolling her eyes...I told her I was not your normal customer...and I'm NOT! I question EVERYTHING! I only wish I knew with Stormie what I know now. I also buck the 30 day heartworm protocol and think that 45 days is an ok dosing period.

Again, what is the 6.6?
Tillie lost a pound over the winter! :) She's a trim, thin girl.

drugs/drugs/drugs....it's what vets and human doctors seem to be pushing these day w/o any regard to the consequences. comes down to $$$
I still miss my old vet and am looking for a new vet...I didn't even see the vet tonight! Just a tech. An anal gland empty would have been another $20 so I said *no thanks, I can squeeze her butt myself*..and I do. :)

Probably the red blood cell count. 6.6 million red blood cells. This falls well within normal range (as does the pcv of 56%) and is fine.

Good for you, Mrs. Gates. FRONTLINE IS POISON. Please evryone, do not use this product especilly if you have a small dog. Learn from tohers' disasterous (and expensive) experience. Big Pharmas are the worst in deceptive advertising and manufacuring treatments that are absolutey not regulated properly. Most vets just close their eyes to the whole situation. They seem not to want to be bothered with the truth. Natch, when you bring your sick dog back to them, you pay hefty fees to try to bring them back to health. Jan

mrs. gates, dont allow the stupid tech who rolled her eyes to deter you...
your job is to look out for your dog and im glad to see that you obviously do that.
some of these vets/techs that are so closed off to learning new information are just as big of problems as the corporations that supply this poison in the first place.
kudos to you,

Mrs. Gates,

Whenever I take my dog Tipsi in for her routing PCV check the veterinaria always gives me two numbers just as your did. The first number is always her PCV which lately has been ranging around 45%. The second number which is typically around the same range that you received of 6.6 is the reading for their total solids. I believe that checks the fat in the blood, however I'm not 100% sure that is in fact what it checks for.

And you have every right to not be a normal customer at the vets office. After caring for an AIHA dog, you can never be a typical customer anymore. You have to question everything. The vets definately do not know everything thats best for your animals. Otherwise they wouldn't be selling all those horrible flea and tick treatments.

Layla -- you are so right. After a person has had to deal with IMHA hitting his/her beloved dog, the person will never again be a typical pet owner. I have learned so much in the last few years, and I know now that I need to ask questions about everything.

I know my dear beagle had wonderful health care, but it damn near killed me a few months after Wiley's death to hear the vet (who assumed Wiley's treatment in 2003) say she would never give Lyme vaccine to her dog. She continued to give Wiley the vaccine -- which the previous vet started administering in 1995 -- even though she wouldn't give it to her own dogs. And she never even raised her apprehensions with me.
