| Hey everyone, Things have been pretty quiet which is good in my household. I wrote before regarding Gunner's swollen elbow/leg. Well low and behold his other leg started. Took him to the vet several times for the right leg and just this Tuesday for the other side ... last night the leg swelled up pretty bad and low and behold as I was driving home from work just now I get a call from my husband saying it burst open. Lots of fluid/discharge came out. I of course called my vet asap waiting now for a call back. I've been researching online and it says that this can be common(to burst open) Has anyone had any experience with Hygroma ? Gunner has always slept on the sofa but since being sick and on all the meds it has been impossible to get him to sleep on anything soft, he LOVES to lay on the cold hardwood floor. I've been wrapping his elbows making them very cushy so he has some padding to lay on, my vet also said that would be best to do .... We are of course going to make a smaller space full of blankets with a fan so he will stay cool and hope that works. My vet mentioned about something called DogLeggs has anyone used or heard of them ? Other news his blood work has all been good, still holding strong at 39 (rbc) everything else is pretty good too . Thanks for any suggestions and advice :) I hope everyone is well furry and human ! Love, Jacki and Gunner xo |

| Jacki, http://www.dogleggs.com/files/hygroma.cfm This is very similar to a human bursa condition fondly called housewife's knee. The correct medical term is Baker's cyst. It is a collection of fluid in the bursa behind the knee that can get very large. The patient I treated had so much fluid behind the knee that the circulation was impaired in the lower leg. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002202/ I might suspect that there has been some injury to the "knee" (elbow) other than just laying around. But the doglegg would work just fine to reduce the size. Again, if there is impairment of circulation, it would be time to do something more. Check the paws for warmth at least once a day, a cold paw might be an indication of a circulation impairment. If I was looking at this, I might try to make my own version of dogleggs using some kind of kind of neoprine bandage. I found this link to horse bandages. http://www.bigdweb.com/BRACE-BANDAGES-NEOPRENE-PAIR/productinfo/18270/ If you do this make sure your vet views how you wrap this so that you do not impair circulation. my best patrice |
