Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - How long does it take Cyclosporine to absorb?

I think I am obsessed with this site. Tonight, Oliver took really well to the cyclosporine and didn't pant or seem out of sorts after taking it. Pretty energetic, etc. Exactly 2 1/2 hours after giving Oliver his cyclosporine I game him approximately 5-6 Tablespoons of combo of food along with his bio-prep capsule. Combo of food was brown rice, cottage cheese, couple of chunks of cooked red/yellow bell pepper, applesauce and small amount of canned salmon(wellness brand, grain free for dogs) About 20 minutes after, he pucked it up. It wasn't a pretty sight. He seemed absolutely fine afterwards. I guess the obvious suggestion would be not to give so much food so soon after taking the cyclo. I think I have learned my lesson on that. After 2 1/2 hours would the cyclo have been absorbed into his system enough that his pucking wouldn't have disturbed the absorbtion. He is fine now and wasn't in distress prior to pucking. I think I just gave him too much , too soon. Maybe the best plan, for tomorrow night, is one small teaspoon full of food to contain the sprinkled bioprepartion. Anyone else been through this, is it best to let your pup go the rest of the evening on a relatively empty stomach after taken the cyclo? He gets it @ 7pm. I give him the bio prep about 2 1/2 hours after the cyclo. I'm looking for words of advice on this, so I don't make the same mistake twice.. We are in your kind, knowledgeable hand my dear friends. I await your words of advice.

The only time Nollaig vomited throughout this whole illness was about a month ago and it was because she's so ravenous due to the pred that she eats too quickly and she would vomit about 1 and a half to two hours later. So the vet suggested I just give her the food a little at a time over say 5 minutes and thank God we've never had a problem since.
Maybe try this tact first, as we sometimes jump in and start blaming the meds, when it's something as simple,as in Nollaig's case,of the stomach reflex just regurgitating, due to eating too fast.

With regards to absorption of cyclosporine after 2 and a half hours, all I can say is I have another beagle called Spike who has epilepsy and I was told by the vet if he brings up his absolutely necessary pills (otherwise he fits) within half an hour give him the whole dose again, if within hour and a half, give him half the dose,so I think you'll be safe enough at 2 and a half hours later Mardi.

Hopefully this was just a one off.I do hope Oliver's pcv improves quickly, for not only his sake, but your stress levels too!!

Nollaig's still padding about the place and eating VERY enthusiastically and her eyes appear a lot brighter... so the fight goes on, with God at our side,or hopefully, as in the footsteps in the sand story, he's carrying Nollaig in his arms until she gets through this bad patch in her precious life.

We give ours at 9am which is after she eats in the morning. Then at 9pm which is well after she eats at night. She hasnt had a problem tolerating this at all. I was thinking about changing the time frame, to 7am/7pm but that would interfere with the being closer to meal times. So maybe after reading this I'll just stick to the 9am/9pm schedule. She is given only one pill of Atopica in the mornings only.

thanks Kathleen and Pam. I think his tummy was just to full of water and food. Kathleen, good to hear that Nollaig is hanging in there and still wanting to gobble up his food. I have every confidence she will make it through this. Take care.

Mardi, even though you are only giving Oliver a few chuncks of bell pepper, its very acidic and might not be a good thing for Olivers digestive system at the moment.

Glad to hear he is otherwise tolerating the Cyclo.
