Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - How is Ruger?

Hey Jaime, Just wondering how Ruger is doing? We haven't heard from you guys in a bit. Hope all is well...Kelly, Max and Tito

Thanks for asking Kelly. He is hanging in there. Still will not eat...anything. I tried the purina en food and he ate it like candy the first night and now, like everything else he won't have anything to do with it. I have tried everything. His dr. thinks it is from the increase in leflunomide to stop the disease or perhaps the new antibiotic he had to go on because the one he had been on is on back order by the manufacturer.

Good news is the ulcer bleeding seems to have stopped and his stool is again normal. No blood and no diarrhea. He goes in tomorrow for CBC and I hope and pray the disease is finally stopped so we can decrease some meds. How long does it take the disease to stop on average? He had been on the meds for 2 months and still has spherocytes and agglutination. I so hope they are gone tomorrow. I know if we can decrease some meds he will start eating again and that will make him feel better. I will update tomorrow with good news : )

Jaime, I am glad to hear his ulcers are better. As far as the disease stopping there are so many variables from dog to dog it's hard to say. What antibiotics is he on? And is he on a stomach protectant? I can't remember if he was or not? I will pray for his continued recovery and the good news I am sure you will get tomorrow!! Kelly, Max and Tito

Huge sigh of relief...not as bad as the dr. thought. Ruger's PCV dropped to 21. Not a good sign. He is not eating and has lost 2 kilos but I just got the full CBC report and it is not all bad.

The agglutination has stopped - yay! Still spherocytes but not agglutinating. PCV is low but after his episode last Friday night we think that it has dropped because of all of the bleeding ulcers and not the disease. The ulcers have stopped bleeding so hopefully his PCV will be on the rise now.

Still not eating but started him on anti-nausea meds and stopped the cephalex antibiotic so hopefully this helps. If it does not improve we will lower the dose of leflunomide and he will go back on the azathiaprine along with the cyclosporine.

Great news is his liver values decreased. His ALT was 1100 and it is down to 400. We decreased the pred from 40mg to 30 mg last week and I am sure this is why they are better but still makes me feel better.

He is on tylosin for the diarrhea and this also seems to be helping. Now we just need the PCV to go back up and the disease to stop...oh yeah and eating would be good too.

Hopefully things continue to look up for my big boy!!!

This is very good news. You must feel much better. Keep thinking positive. Ruger will turn things around.
