Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Holly update June 16, 2009

Hi all,
Haven't been on here to much lately as we are in our high season at the cabins right now and just really been busy, but I wanted to share with everyone some great news!!!

Holly had her 2 month blood work done yesterday and her hematocrit was 55.5 and her alkaline phosphatase is holding at 440 still high but that is okay. Other then the Alkaline Phosphatase and her Lipase numbers being high ALL her other numbers where perfect!! We are so happy.

For those of you new, Holly is a dachshund, and was diagnosed in March 2007 and has fought a very hard long battle. For the last 2 months she has only been on 1mg of prednisone twice a week, and we are awaiting Dr Dodds next suggestion on the reduction.

For those of you just starting or into this horrible disease a short time, please don't give up, sometimes it just takes time and patience but can be done.

Just heard back from Dr Dodds, said we have 2 choices, either go down to 1mg once per week or leave the same as Monday & Friday. She is doing so well we have decided to go down to once per week.

Dr Dodds thinks it is a good idea to leave on very small dose for longer period of time to prevent any relapse. But she says once per week is fine, so we are off and running for another 2 months.

That's wonderful Linda. I think I would have went to the once a week routine also. I know how reassuring it feels to get this from Dr. Dodds. She's been giving Tessy and I some recommendations and today we dropped Tessy's pred again from 40 to 30mg. Will continue on this coarse every 5-7 days until we reach 10mg/day. Dr. Dodds said the same thing to us about the importance of taking it slower once were down to these levels.

In any case it's great to hear that Holly is getting the meds out of her system and is doing so well.

High paws from Tessy.

Hi.
Glad to hear your Holly is making progress. Dogs can recover from this awful condition.
My dog Holly (springer spaniel) had AIHA starting last May. She was critically ill and in intensive care Bristol for 2 weeks. She continued after with preds, aspirin, zantac and is now AIHA free and drug free. We have a marvellous vet who monitored her closely.
However, she has just this week been diagnosed with low blood platet count, so today possible treatment protocol to be discussed. But Holly is a fighter.

Well done Linda and Holly - Just starting out with this awful disease but good to know that there are SOME success stories after all the horrors you read. Well done both of you!
