Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Holly on Metronidazole

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has used Metronidazole for high bacteria in stool? For the last 2 weeks Holly has had so much gas, really unbelievable and then about 1 week ago very mucuous bowel movements and runny, and this morning she threw up a pile of while flem. So we took a stool sample to the vet today and they found it to be very high with bacteria and gave us this Metronidazole to use.

They said she could have picked up something in yard, we watch her very closely, but live in the mountains and have rabbits, squirrels and of course that is one of Holly's favorite things to eat (poop) The vet said Rabbit poop is very high with bacteria??

Other then that she is doing fine, but now just wondering if since off the aziathioprine that caused this. Gums and ears are still very pink.

I know they prescribed that for digestive issues. I live in the same kind of area nad my dogs love the turkey poop. We have lots of rabbits too so that is good to know about the bacteria. This stupiddisease puts us in between a rock and hard place, make sense? Because I had Wylie on her heartworm plus that kills parasites too since she like to eat gross stuff and we think that may have triggered her relapse.

Once sHolly is off the med, I would get her on a good probiotice to help grow the benefical bacteria in the stomach. I just started Wylie on nzymes bac pac which is a probiotice/digestive enzyme combo.

Wylie was having real bad gas too enough you had to leave the room, her stools have been fine though

Linda,
Yes, used this on a maintenance, low dose, regimen for Chance and it worked miracles. We no longer have any issues. My vet actually just prescribes a quantity to me and allows me to dose when and in the amount I think is necessary. I don't think I have had to use any in 6 months.

There are some side effects from this drug, if you are worried, ask your vet what they are and if they think Holly would be bothered by them.

Kahlu had VERY runny stools after diagnosis and his start on prednisone. We tried Forti Flora and pumpkin for about a week, but that did not help. He was then on Metronidazol (acording to my vet a very safe drug) for a week and that made things much better. We finished up the Forti Flora and keep going with pumpkin. His stools are normal now.

Thanks guys, feel better now knowing it is okay.

It is just amazing what they will eat when they can outside. Our other little chihuhua is a real stinker for Holly's poop, tried meat tenderizer suggested by the vet but didn't really work. At least Holly is not that bad only other animals.

We've used it with Slinky too. I don't think I've used it since the IMHA. Slinky has had just about every intestinal upset out there...it's one of the things that makes her Ig deficiency make sense in hindsight.
