I am posting this New Thread for Cynthia! Cynthia, Texas, m_cfunderburk@yahoo.com My 11 year old was just diagnosed today with AIHA. I can see that many people have endured alot. At this moment, I feel that this could possibly be his last night, yet I see that he could pull through this. His platelets are low, of course. He has been through his second steroid injection tonight, has fluid in his lung etc. Is there really light at the end of the tunnel? Please give me any feedback you have. I want to be realistic by putting him first - i.e. not my needing him to be around but him feeling good to stick around!

Cynthia: I've felt that same way many a nights with Lucy. You just have to have faith in your pup and in the doctors working on him. There is light at the end of the tunnel. It may take a bit to be able to see a bit of it but it will come. The power of prayer is tremendous... Your boy is in my prayers tonight.. Love, Crissy and Lucy

Cynthia, I am so very sorry to hear that your most beloved canine companion has been diagnosed with AIHA. With low platelets you may be dealing with ITP (immune mediated thrombocytopenia) as well as AIHA. When a dog has both AIHA and ITP at the same time, he is said to be suffering from a conditon known as Evans Syndrome. Would you happen to know the PCV (Packed Cell Volume)? While AIHA is a very difficult disease dogs who have been diagnosed with it and/or Evans Syndrome CAN and DO recover and go on to live happy healthy lives. If you have not read my Web site on AIHA/IMHA as yet, you might want to do so when you can. The URL is http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/ Be sure to follow the links on the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the SUCCESS STORIES pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE. I truly do know how hard this is so please be assured you and your most beloved canine companion are in my thoughts and prayers during these most difficult days.
