Hi everyone, Tiggs is doing really well! We just returned from CSU in Ft. Collins where they reviewed his treatment thus far and give him and his vet here in SLC a big thumbs up. We've been able to reduce his Pred, now to 40 mg/day (we started at 120 mg/day!). His PCV today was an unbelievable 37! Three weeks ago, I would not have envisioned us getting to this point. We are defintely cautiously optimistic. Both his regular vet and CSU vets recommend Heartgard. I have read online, and even on this forum some controversy around this. We are finally on the road to recovery, and I hate to jeopordize anything, but my vet has already treated 3 cases of heartworm this season, and I'm worried either way! What do you all do? What should we do? Please advise! Thank you! Melissa

Melissa, Congratulations on your good news today! I asked Dr. Dodds about heartworm meds for IMHA dogs and she recommended either Interceptor every 45 days or a daily med (I don't recall the name but I've seen other people mention it, so hopefully someone will post it for you). I give Murray the Interceptor at 45 day intervals during the "high risk" season in Chicago (so not all year round). Bonnie

We use dimmitrol, from canadavet. Inexpensive too. It is a daily preventative. You MUST test negative first for heartworm, then it MUST be given every day - no forgetting! Its what was previously used in US as filaribits - you can google. we have posts here discussing this elsewhere on vetnet aiha group - please do a search, very interesting discussions! dimmitrol has been used for over 40 years, and is safe.
