Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Heartworm Medicine

Darcy is due her Interceptor heartworm med on Wednesday, but I am worrying about whether or not I should give it to her. I've always given it to her on a monthly basis. After her non-regenerative anemia was diagnosed by our regular vet at the end of July, I gave her an Interceptor on August 1. Two weeks later, when we finally got in to see the internal specialist, I questioned her about whether or not I should continue to give the Interceptor and she told me that I should continue. I don't know what to do. Darcy is an indoor dog. But, I am seeing mosquitoes when I take her outside or let her out in the fenced yard to do her thing, so there's a chance that she could get a bite. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone know Dr. Dodds' protocol on heartworm preventative?

Thanks, Karen

She told me that a European Study showed efficacy dosing at every 45 days. Advised me to continue with Chance on that schedule. He had no problems with it.

If you haven't given a heartworm tab in a while it would be best to have a Snap 4DX test done at the vets to make sure there is no active heartworm.

I had a dog die from heartworm in the early 70's. Heather was my sweetheart. Heartworm was virtually unknown at the time and there were no preventatives.

Darcy has never missed her monthly heartworm preventative and gets the required testing for heartworms when the time comes around for it. I do remember reading about the 45 day schedule. I'll check with our vet to see if the 30 day schedule is safe.

Adverse Reactions
The following adverse reactions have been reported following the use of INTERCEPTOR: Depression/ lethargy, vomiting, ataxia, anorexia, diarrhea, convulsions, weakness and hypersalivation.

I would be very nervous giving it to a dog with a history of a weakened immune system with these adverse reactions being published on Novartis' website. My dog's anemia stemmed from an adverse reaction from Frontline, so I am particlarly now a strong non-believer in big-pharma and their deceptive product marketing protocols. Jan

I questioned the internal specialist today about whether or not to give Darcy the Interceptor heartworm preventative and she told me that I should give it to her. I then asked if I should give it every 30 days, as I've always done, or whether I should change to every 45 days. She told me to give it every 30 days. So, I did give it to her today. I pray I did the right thing.

I've also consulted with our vet, and a specialist at CSU vet hospital in Ft. collins. They both agree that the every 45 days is appropriate and will offer protection. Also, they suggested dosing it half in the am, and the other half in the evening to monitor for reaction.

All that being said, we have opted NOT to use any preventatives for Tiggs while his is still in a compromised state- this is just us of course. I do feel conflicted about this as well, and we do have heartworm here in Utah. But, that is what we've decided for this summer at least.

I dont know the difference between interceptor and heartgard, which my dog is on, my vet said okay to 45 days which is what I do.

When Wylie was at her sickest this spring, my vet had me skip a month which ended up being about 60 days and freaked me out because we were in the midst of our mosquito season. She is also a senior at 11 so I wonder if that had any bearing.

For me the scary part is now tick season which starts today with our rainy season which we have not had since last spring. Ticks are seasonal here that start in the fall with rain thru the spring. I use preventic collars so biting my nails on this one
