What do you'll think about giving Heart Worm meds. 2 an IMHA dog? Thanks, T.

T. Rose and Layla: We give Sheba, our GSD/Cocker Spaniel mix and 1+ year survivor, Iverhart Max and have done so since before she got sick. When we brought her home from her 6 day stay in the ICU at ISU, they told us it was okay to give it to her (it was time for her to get it). We have always given Sheba the same medication year round. Because of the timing of her illness we knew that her heartworm medication could not be the cause of her IMHA so we felt fairly comfortable giving it to her. Every dog is different so I think you have to decide for yourself whether the benefits outweigh the risks. And how comfortable you are with taking the risk to either medicate or not. Just remember - whatever decision you make - it is ultimately your decision and you should feel confident and positive about it. And everyone here will understand and support whatever decision you make. Rita, Mike and Sheba

this is a tough one for me...we held off last summer when Tiggs was very sick. Then of course this year, we were faced with that same decision. We opted to follow the advice from a few vets we consulted with- we give Tiggs Interceptor every 45 days (instead of 30), and we split the dose half in the am, half in the pm, just to monitor for reaction and not overload the system. We have only given the May dose, but plan to continue this through October. We do live in a heartworm positive area. Good luck with your decision, it's not an easy one, I have tortured myself with this very question. melissa and tiggs

I am o glad this has been brought up. We are lucky enough to live in a heart worm free zone, but guess what..... we are crazy enough to go traveling with Kahlu in about 5 weeks. You probably think I am nuts to do this. My husband got the opportunity to do professional development in Reno Nevada and I decided months ago to go with him. We will be in Reno for 1 week staying in a hotel (La Quinta, they take dogs at no extra charge!) and it will take us about 4-5 days to get there and drive back to Vancouver Island. I thought of just using something to keep the mosquitoes of Kahlu. We have a homeopathic vet in the area that I will also consult with. I haven't even mentioned it to my regular vet. I know I am taking a risk, but I also know Kahlu is happier to be with us traveling than staying with somebody else. The other option is for me to stay at home with the dog and then I have a very unhappy, disappointed husband. So what to do? Any words of wisdom? Best wishes to all of you, Brigitte & Kahlu

I am in the same with Melissa, except we do think the heartgard may have triggered her relapse and she switched to interceptor, she has been on it 2 months, we have bad heartworm here. Brigitte, I only live 3 hours from Reno, but its a totally different climate, Reno I is considered High desert, I dont think they have heartworm, because I dont think they have mosquitos there. Can you somehow check with a few vets in Reno Laurie

Yep, we are doing it, though it makes me nervous.
