Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Good news, bad news...

We took Aiyana in for blood work yesterday, I really was hoping for good news all around, but not the case. The good news is her liver values have come down, not normal yet, but he believes that is now due to the pred. we don't need to worry about her bilirubin anymore, so she is off the ursodial. Bad news is her PCV went from 29.8 down to 25.2 in the last month, I could kind of tell that it was lower. Her reticulocyte count is way up, I am not sure if that is good or bad, she is regenerating, but maybe too soon? He has increased her pred., and we are to continue with the milk thistle, SAMe and the ranitodine. We go back again in 2 weeks.

This is so hard on the old girl, seems so wrong that I would get two dogs in less than 2 years with this awful disease. Our Vet is now leaning towards vaccines as having caused hers. Our Lab Dream and Sibe Hurley both had reactions this last time...Aiyana seemed fine for a while. His words exactly, never have her vaccinated again (nor Dream she is old too) Hurley will only get rabies from now on.

Blessings to all of you battling this disease, I do not post often (am caring for my elderly father and sick dogs LOL), but I read your posts and pray for all of you.

Julie:
4 pts isn't too bad a drop. I hope things turn around for Aiyana. Hang in there and don't forget to take care of yourself too :)

Julie, I am in the same boat as you, Wylie is 11, diagnosed in April and relapsed in the 25th. she was down to 27, but back up to 31. Read my thread I posted yesterday, about why was Azipirothene prescribed. Maybe that is something you shuld check into.

Are you doing the blood test instead of the spin? Sounds liek it since your readinging is so accurate, Wylies blood etest is alway 5 points lower than the spin one and I read here that seem to be the general concensus

prayers and good luck to Aiyana

If you can afford... Denamerin works to protect the liver. Finally, my pup is being weaned off pred and has been taking denamerin for his liver since his liver values dropped while on pred. Since the reduction of pred his liver values have improved drastically. So you may want to talk to your vet about how this could work for Aiyana.

Thank you everyone,

My Vet is well respected and known for saving even the worst causes... but when it comes to treating AIHA, he seems to believe that a lot of the other drugs and transfusions are not worth the complications and side effects. I am not saying I agree with him, I just remember how I fought with him about Wolfie LOL. I am very thankful that Aiyana is not as severe a case yet as our dear Wolfie was. He does want to see her in 2 weeks for more blood work again, I hope doubling the pred. does the trick. She is on a much lower dose than Wolfie was, and Wolfie was a much smaller dog... but... that first month Aiyana was responding to only 20 mg. pred. once a day.

When I picked up her meds the other day I requested copies of her blood work... and was shocked about the liver values (I thought he said they had gone down, but they are way up). I called him early yesterday morning and we discussed it, he said he was not too concerned yet, that it was probably the Prednisone causing it, and they would go back down. As far as I could see the only thing that improved was her bilirubin.

I hate this roller coaster ride...

praying for all of you,

Julie
